Don't be an ostrich...

It was more of an analogy, in that ostriches put their heads in the sand to escape "danger". :)

I got the ostrich reference (even if it is actually an old wives tale, and ostriches never put their heads in the sand).

Well done to you for helping and taking charge, if only more people did that:)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

The bystander effect or Genovese syndrome is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases where individuals do not offer help in an emergency situation when other people are present. The probability of help has in the past been thought to be inversely related to the number of bystanders; in other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help.

I've come off my bike on a blind bend, it was smashed up in the middle of the road but I was fine, just a bit "WTF" and my boots had come off in the hedge. I counted 15 cars that drove round my bike on a blind bend and didn't even look . I was on a country road and to them I could have been miles away from home. Luckily I was 200 yards from my street and just pushed it home after clearing the mess myself.

It's good you share your story, people should be stopping no matter what and the more you share and point this out the better. I've come to accidents that have happened out of my view but have been the first person to stop and respond at a busy time of day. It wasn't that long back when I bike slid into a curb his foot got in the way. He was fine but couldn't tell if it was broken so made him stay put for the services. As his bike was spilling fuel from the overflow I picked it up. He was worried about the police recovering it so I told the police I'd move it to a very close car park with his permission which saved him £100+ and I took the keys to his neighbor while they took him to A&E. I makes me wonder if anyone else would do the same? Anyone who doesn't stop is a coward and IMO, shouldn't be on the road as it is illegal to be a direct witness and not stop for an accident.

I've said it elsewhere but good on ya. :)

I was a witness to an RTA that bizarrely happened outside the flat I used to live in a few years back. Taxi driver had been hijacked by someone wanting his takings, and he pulled a knife on the driver - I was told all this after the accident happened - who panicked, tried to turn round to grab the knife off him, and therefore wasn't looking where he was going and smashed into a parked car outside my flat at about 20mph.

Thief got out and legged it. I heard the bang as I was walking into my flat and turned round to see what it was. Taxi driver is parked in the side of the stationary car, with a big crack in the windscreen and blood everywhere.

I ran in the house, grabbed a tea towel (first thing I had to hand) came back out, and then sat there holding it on his head and keeping him from slipping into unconsciousness - I asked him what had happened hence me knowing -
and everytime he tried to shut his eyes I would tell him he couldnt and he needed to open his eyes and keep chatting to me. Another passerby called an ambulance and the police, and whilst they must have turned up in a few minutes it seemed like a lot longer.

Then the professionals took over, police took my details and then I had to give a statement at a later date. They never caught the bloke unfortunately, but they said that in a lot of cases, its just a criminal taking a chance and trying to get some money.

I think instinct just kicked in and I got on with it, sounds like yours did too. Fair play to you FF :)

Good for you Freefaller, too few people help out at accidents/incidents so i highly commend you for doing so. Nice to know i'm not the only one who stops to help! :)

Fascinating, and shocking at the same time!

Good on you. And yes, that's the reason for my post, to share and hopefully "get the message out there". :) Even if you don't know what to do, do something but don't walk away thinking everything will be ok.

I asked the guys name, told him my name, told him the ambulance is on the way, and a blanket is on it's way, "you'll be alright - I'm not going anywhere" that sort of thing. Even that can really give a bit of reassurance to someone who's been injured or even in shock.

A nice neighbour made us all a cup of tea! :)

Even though you did the right thing, I'm sure you'll get a fine for parking in the bus lane for your trouble (and they won't accept any excuses).

Well done to you freefaller.

This is something I have forced myself to do more of recently, taking an active role rather that just thinking "oh someone else will deal with it" obviously this has only been with minor thing but its just the principle.

I spoke to the police officer and he gave me the CAD number and a copy of my statement, and his details if I do have an issue. Furthermore, it's a company car and if I explain the situation, they'll sort it out for me. Not too bothered really - and heck, even if I didn't, I'd just deal with it there and then. :)

He does have the most awesome excuse ever though!

He's a Frog who wasn't an Ostrich and he's got a note from some Pig in a Panda Car! Please god let this incident be near a Zebra Crossing close to the Elephant and Castle..

Unfortunately it wasn't effluent and castle, but wandsworth!

However, as you say, sounds fairly implausible! ;)

I'm glad to see that others in this thread would try and do the right thing - and agree that taking pictures is somewhat crass.
