Downloading 360 profiles

Just a quickie. I assumed it was possible to 'download' your 360 profile to a second machine as each controller can log on to a separate profile.

I basically wanted to be able to go around a friend's house and use my profile incase I unlocked achievements etc, or so I could use my unlocked characters in games like DOA to play with. Upon trying this it seems recovering your profile from like wipes its details.

Is it not possible to link a local profile to one on live somehow?

Put your profile on a memory card, this is how Microsoft intended you to get your profile to your friends. You can recover it however without loss (atleast, I've never lost anything).

I don't exactly want to buy another momory device just for this when it should really be as simple as entering a username and password. As for the recovery, when I tried it, it warned me that all save-game data and achievements will be lost if I recover it?
