Light output from my headlights gives me good night time visibility but not really great visibility. I am currently running Halfords Super Brilliance 55w bulbs for main beams and some other generally high-output 55w bulbs for dipped.

I am reluctant to fit more powerful bulbs to either because I dont want to risk the reflectors melting or annoying other road users or plod, so the solution seems simple - fit driving lamps!

My current plan is to mount them where the foglights should be on my Mondeo. The holes are there, I just need to order a foglight grille from the bay and then I can pick some lights - problem is, I have absolutely no idea about the driving lamp market!!

Some questions:

1. I have bought the proper Ford headlight switch that allows for fog operation. Having taken a look at it, the main beams and fog switch circuitry look identical, so I assume it can take the extra current from running some powerful lights?

2. What lights should I get? My choice is limited because I want them to be square to fit into the fog light gap in the grille. Could I get away with massively uprating the bulbs in the proper Ford foglights? If not, what sort of brands should I be looking at to get the kind of brightness I want?

That would give you a really bright beam that extends about 2m infront of your car and would therefore be useless for everyday driving.

Can't be of any more help than to tell you not to do that really :D

Now you mention it, yeah - they wont be the most adjustable lights in the world!

Right then, proper lights :D

Main beams and fog lights will be on seperate circuits controlled by a relay. Check the amp rating of the fuse for the fog light circuit and determine if your new lamps will require more or less current to run.
