Driving Long Distances - Pug 206

You guys would love my missus' parents. They stop 2 or 3 times on a trip to Leicester, and even once stayed over night in a Travelodge in Walsall on the way back from Stoke, because drving there and back in a day was just too far.

Next week I'm required to do a few 380 mile round trips for work. Mostly M6/A69 or M62/A1(M) depending which way I decide to go.

Just wondering if my humble 2001 Peugeot 206 1.4 petrol will cope OK with this?

I did 120 mile per day round trips from Home (up the A31, M27, M3) to Basingstoke for 8 months in a N reg 1.4 Ford Fiesta Si a couple of years ago. Actually was quite a comfortable driving position helped by the Si seats which were nice. Had 19k miles on when I bought it in 07 (old person) and had closer to 50k on when I sold it in 08.

I survived fine and actually the car was spot on with no mechanical issues. If that can cope your Pug 206 can

The car will manage but I wouldnt want to do that sort of mileage in a week in a 206, especially not for somebody else.

Get them to provide a hire car or a train ticket instead.

Yeah but using your own car == 40p per mile allowance ;)

Thanks all! It should be OK as it was serviced 6 months ago. I also have AA cover just in case! :p

They are paying 32p/mile fuel allowance so I'll be quids in by the end of the week! :D

Take a few pillows of varying shapes/sizes and a largish bath towel. If the comfort level in that pug is anything like an old Felicia you'll need them (more so if you're over 30 and have "lived").

i once did 660 ish miles in a day in a 206 donkeys years back

my mk3 golf has done 300 miles a week, on average, ever since in bought it 4.5 years ago

Just a thought, isn't part of the reason they pay so much per mile also to cover any insurance costs you will get by declaring it?

If its work miles aren't they declared seperately? This is a genuine question because I heard it mentioned before and would have thought this is the scenario (if any) it applies to.

No, you have to specify that you want business use on the policy, some insurers ask for the annual business miles. Individual journeys don't need to be declared and it rarely adds much if anything to the policy. Saying that, if the op just has SDP&C cover, then he won't be able to legally make the trip.

The cost is to cover the overall cost, insurance, tax, wear and tear, servicing, petrol etc etc.

I still wouldn't want to do it in a 206, not for 40 odd quid "profit"

Interesting thanks.

Some useful info for the OP there as well :)

I already have Business Class 1 insurance as sometimes I've been required to drive to other local branches of the company.

Seriously?

It's 190 miles each way, why are people making this out to be some epic journey that requires a million rest stops?

I'd just get it driven. Preferably in one hit. I don't even stop (except for fuel) when driving to the Alps.

That's alright with you.

Someone like me will need to stop at least once each way to have a rest. Bored, cramp legs drink food etc... And knowing me i'll fall asleep on the wheel. So no good there.
I need the lot LOL :p
