Driving without seatbelt

I always put my seat-belt on. The only time I haven't is when I had to pop out of the car and to turn the garage lights on so I can reverse into the garage.

I've cut loads of people out of car crashes (dead and alive) and can guarantee that if you've seen some of the things I have, you'd all wear seatbelts (although it must be said the majority of you do).

If we dont in our car then it bleeps like mad, and it does it with the passenger seat in the front as that has a sensor so it knows when someone is sat in it.

Depends with me

if im a passenger
if im doing any kind of spirited driving
if im on a long trip > 20 mins
if im going anywhere i dont know the roads
if im using back roads

when im in town or in built up areas then i dont tend to, reasons? well comfort is one i spose but driving a coupe where your naturally inclined to be leaning back it makes a slight bit trickier to quickly lean forward and see further round a junction, maybe its because im not particularly tall, maybe ill regret it someday but id rather have better visibility and avoid an accident than be in one

i have been done for this though. exiting the driveway of the crewe hall hotel that comes onto a 60 road, visibility is crap and you cant stick your nose out for fear of it being ripped off, practically have my head in the windscreen to see out and make sure its safe, turned right and at the end of the road there was a copper waiting on roundabout

also: i dont consider myself an unsafe driver, friends who a couple of years ago always repremanded my for not putting it one have recently not been bothing themselves when in my car, i suggested they did because i wont take risks with other peoples lives

Are you sure about HGV's?
I think delivery drivers are exempt though.
the way the law stands (or did the last time i checked anyway)
the law says even HGV drivers MUST wear seatbelts if their vehicle is fitted with them.
however an HGV driver is exempt from wearing his seatbelt if he is doing local deliveries.

My mate who spends a lot of time driving in his job leaves the front seat belts buckled up and sits on top of them to stop the beeping and I have never seen him wear a seat belt in the last ten years he has been driving, I have to admit to not wearing a seat belt in my car all the time when I am only doing short journeys as I am one of the people who do find them restrictive and uncomfortable but I think I will wear one all the time from now on as it is worth putting up with some discomfort if it saves me from serious injury or worse.

One reason I realy liked my 2001 Dodge Neon was that there was a solenoid on the gear shifter (automatic transmission). It was released by applying the brake pedal (thereby turning on the brake lights).

I patched it into the seatbelt warning light. I then patched the transmission shifter computer power into the same circuit.

In other words, if the seatbelt light came on (which happened if someone sat in a seat without a seatbelt on), the car would not shift out of Park. If someone undid thier seatbelt after the car was out of Park, the transmission would basically shift itself into Neutral.

In other words, if you sat in my car, I no longer had a choice (neither did you) as to whether you wore a seatbelt or not. The car was not going anywhere unless you did.

I've already submitted what I did to my car (in intricate detail) to the Detroit 3 (which also include Mitsubishi, Mazda, Mercedes, Saab, and Rover), Toyota, BMW, Fiat, and Citroen. I also included how it could be done on a stickshift car as well.

Almost every one of them thought it was a hell of a good idea, to the point that Chrysler is thinking on including it in thier 2007 model line. Ford and GM 2008.

So for those that don't like wearing your seatbelt, better start getting used to wearing it, unless you like your car not to move......

Funny this should come up really.

Up untill about a month ago i used to wear mine all the time, never felt secure or happy without it. But all of a sudden i started to feel restricted and stopped wearing it most of the time (i still wear it on the motorway for instance). I'm really not happy about it though. I shall be wearing it again from now on though, this i think is some kind of sign.

*High fives thread*

It's totally automatic for me to put my seatbelt on as soon as I get in the car... I don't even think about it. Wouldn't dream of driving or being a passenger in a car without one on.

I always wear mine.

My dad on the other hand has the annoying habbit of starting the car, driving up the road and then remembers to put in on while still driving.

I don't know why, but he does it every single time. :o

I've been a passenger with quite a few people who drive for fifty yards or so whilst wrestling the belt with one hand and the steering wheel with the other; absolutely stupid!! ..... if you are going to wear it, put it on before setting off!

Always wear mine.

It's amazing how many good looking women drivers I see without a belt; those good looks will soon dissappear if they hit anything.

To me it's habbit that I put my seatbelt on as soon as I get in the car - this means although there's no need I often find myself putting it on even if i'm just swapping cars around on the drive without really realising it.

As for people saying not wearing a seatbelt only affects them.... if scraping your body off the road keeps the road closed longer and delays me, I couldn't care one bit that you've dead, but would be damn annoyed at being delayed.

Belt up - there's no reason not to and it might save your life.

If Belts are fitted then you have to wear them simple as ;) unless deliveries are 50m or less apart.

I wear them 100% all the time as do all my passengers my vehcile wont move until everyone is buckled up.

Having had my life saved by seatbelts I will never consider not wearing one

It's just instinctive now to put a seatbelt on as soon as I get into a car I tend to do it without realising it even for short journeys!

As a lot of people have said, it just feels wierd without it - feeling naked is a good description

If you don't wear a seatbelt you are an absolute idiot.

And before you tell me how uncomfortable is, just yesterday I attended several trauma alerts in hospital where (usually passengers) in cars had been seriously injured thanks to not wearing one.

I don't have the exact figures but a seatbelt will save your life and that is the bottom line.
