Drugged driver kills 8 cyclists in Southern Italy

Can't believe such a tragic story has turned into a petty argument about drugs.

RIP.

People like to discuss issues and what has caused them. We could all just pile in with "how sad" but whats the point. You post things to have a discussion, not to just read through 10 pages of notes of sympathy.

And our system doesn't expressly mention a reduction in sentencing but sentences are not as high when people claim to have been on drugs. Especially when the offender is a minor. If you are looking for a night and day difference then you will be disappointed but judges often see a drug to have been partially to blame for someones actions, especially if their actions were out of character.

I don't think it was unintentional to be honest.

You don't just accidently annihilate 8 people on bicycles by "accident" and being stoned wouldn't have altered him so much that suddenly bicycles look like flowers.

I hope he gets 8 life sentances

Might be wrong, but I think if the same thing occurred here, then the max he could get would be 4 years for 'Death by dangerous driving'. I am reasonably sure it is one of the laws that new labour had little to do with changing the sentences involved.

Seems an out of control vehicle is never classed as a weapon.

Laws in Italy will likely differ.

There is a death by dangerious whilst unfit through drink or drugs, which carries a higher sentance.

The mail article is, (ironically) I little more informative, but I still dont feel we have the full picture here, the guy was already banned from driving, I dare say he was a bit of a small time criminal, posibly speeding away from a house he had just robbed?

But no, it's the fact that he had a trace of THC in his system that caused the crash?

Typical Asim, jumping on any opportunity to spout the fact that he takes drugs.

I wish him, and others like him would just stfu. Nobody cares.

Ironic wouldnt you say??...seeing as you cared enough to mention him in your post;).

Personally i never drove myself if i was 'high'...not worth the risk although some people do but thats not for me to judge.

Drugs and driving do not mix 'mmmmmkay.

This

I find it hard to believe the drugs had much to do with it at all - granted they'd of slowed his reactions, etc... but I can't believe they were totally at fault here. It would be a challenge to kill 8 cyclists on purpose... never mind by accident

By the time I'd started driving I didn't smoke very often. I have done it since on a handful of occasions I can see why it's not a brilliant idea.

However it's very hard to see how driving under the influence of marijuana is the primary cause of 8 deaths. He must have been driving like a complete idiot and I doubt that has anything to do with what he'd been smoking.

Sure you can, right up until you hit a 9 year old crossing the road and end up in a fit of giggles as the Police arrive to arrest your sorry, irresponsible and reprehensible ass.

9 year olds dont walk around at 4 in the morning, not where i come from anyway!

dont be a dingbat!

Some of the comments in this thread are frankly disgusting, very similar to those of the 'Is this forum a giant con' thread, hence why they've been removed. Expect holidays if it continues.

I think the problem is that the 'lulz' mentality of GD rubs off on people, and it's all too easy to say something completely inappropriate for any given circumstance. All it takes is one initial comment somewhere, and it eventually cascades through to any thread with a sad story/news article.

Utterly terrible situation though and really difficult to believe something like this happened.

RIP. :(

no but it might have meant like drunk drivers he got distracted and didn't react anywhere near fast enough not to plough into the back/front of them.

Completely sober people apparently regularly slam into the backs of broken down cars on the hard shoulder, so it's perfectly plausible drunk/stoned idiots will hit things.

I've only got the little information from the articles, apparently he was trying to overtake another car and hit all of them oncoming.

"Man who eats pizza before driving kills 10 babies"

Would you blame the pizza?

Just because the guy was on drugs does not mean the drugs caused the accident!
