Drugged driver kills 8 cyclists in Southern Italy

any reason that the thread title emphasises the drugs part ?

its the reckless/dangerous overtake at too high a speed that killed those 8 cyclists. do we know for sure that he wouldn't of attempted the same maneuver at the same time if he had never smoked cannabis before ? do we even know that he was actually high when driving ? AFAIK you cant determine that by tests

italian mentality to driving is probably what caused this not the drugs.

those that have driven in Italy before know that the italian drivers are crazy, i had the displeasure of driving in that country for 2 weeks and hated every moment of it.
i had nutters overtaking me on blind corners (which happened a lot)
nutters coming the other way overtaking bikes but failing to pull in again until the very last moment - utterly stupid.

its just crazy they dont give a **** and i have no idea what their driving test is like over there but its royally screwed.

a mate said to me (whos father lives out there) that essentially most italians hold some religious beliefs and its all down to a 'if i die i die' style of life without any regard for others.

You can quite easily determine it using blood tests. I'm talking UK here, but the Police can request a Doctor to take blood samples if they believe somebody is under the influence of a drug and committed a significant crime.

The issue is that it takes time to get a Doctor in.
The government has already sent its specifications to manafacturers for road side police drug testing equipment. They also have not yet decided on whether there will be zero tolerance or whether a trace amount, like with alcohol will be allowed.

My first ever experience of driving in Italy was getting a taxi in Milan. The driver's ability to watch his in car DVD player and drive at the same time was eye opening.

Drive faster so people cannot overtake you, this is why you have speed camera warnings in a sat nav + various other tools.

So yea, I am sitting there, the light turns green, the guy in front then proceeds to take off the handbrake, put it into 1st, and slowly move away..

So that's what I see happen a lot in the UK.

The other day i am turning into a side road across the main road..
I do not have priority, the guy has, i proceed to edge a bit closer so i am 1/3rd into the road.. That guy was driving real slow, and then decided to let me pass???

One and a half ounces of skunk (dried leaves and flowering parts) a week to myself, never cut with tobacco! I guess you could say that I built up quite a tolerance to it over the years, I really lost myself for a while. Not touched it for over four years now, a truly underrated substance.

I used to be the same, I'm somewhat older than you but I started on weed around the age of 13 and by the time I was 15 I was pretty monged out most of the time getting on high on pretty much anything you could smoke, chew or sniff. The death of a good friend however made me realise that I was on the same road and at 17 I joined the Marines and have never touched drugs since.

Over a dozen of the crew I hung out with have not been so lucky over the years and are no longer with us, having progressed from one drug to another and finally Heroin. One friend is permanently sectioned due to psychosis brought on by excessive cannabis use alone.

Anyone who is stating that the drug use could not of contributed to the action of the Driver in this case is a fool, whilst cannabis doesn't have the same extreme effects on behaviour as Alcohol or LSD or other drugs it does change you perception of the world around you and would have certainly impaired the driver in some way.

Would the accident have happened if the driver had not be under the influence who can say, but I suspect that the decisions he made would not have been so foolhardy had he been completely sober.

I have shown a few cycling mates of mine this thread! They called me a complete saddo for actually visiting this forum! Grow up for f sake.

It’s not about the drugs, it’s about a driver who killed 8 lives. And devastated many more.

RIP to those people that were enjoying their day off.

Most people cant drive.

And before you all defend yourselfs... you wont be better then a driver who passed 3 years ago and recently did an advanced driveing course and passed...

Anyway... Hasnt it been said that if all the drivers in the UK had to undertake a driveing test that 70% would fail? over 90% of older drivers would fail?

Most people cant drive.

Agreed.

What if you've been driving for 20 years and have recently done an advanced/defensive driving course?

Anyway... Hasnt it been said that if all the drivers in the UK had to undertake a driveing test that 70% would fail? over 90% of older drivers would fail?

How it tends to work is that the person pulling statistics from their bum should at least attempt to pretend to have a source :)

I've yet to see anywhere that says he was actually under the influence of weed when this happened. I'm not defending him, he's obviously a tool, but there is a difference between testing positive and being under the influence.

I smoke a bit at weekends which means I'd probably always test positive for weed due to the length of time it stays in the system. But would I really be under the influence say on a Thursday? I doubt it.

2 wrongs dont make a right and i was already going the speed limit....i presume youv never driven in italy to make such a drival comment as that.

No but I've racked up enough hours in the passenger seat in Italy, so i do know what you mean, but you are being a bit extreme about it.. Its not that bad in Italy, the UK is not any better.
