OK, with a sata2 HD whats best to use?

Either I think AHCI enables stuff like NCQ, however running it as IDE just makes it normal IDE styleee and therefore no NCQ.

I run my DS3P drives off the ICH8R controller in AHCI mode, no idea why but it sounded cool at the time

Ok, thanks. When I enable AHCI the gigabyte sata screen appears on boot, seems a bit pointless just for an ide optical drive as the HD's are on the intel ports.

The Gigabyte RAID screen would only appear if you have selected the Gigabyte AHCI option instead of the Intel option. The Intel RAID screen will appear if you have selected it.

There should be two SATA mode options in the Integrated Peripherals menu.n use the other one for the Intel controller.

Thanks for the info, currently only have the gigabyte sata drivers installed so guess i'll leave it on the gigabyte one for now as I don't fancy a reinstall. What exactly is wrong with gigabyte controller anyway?

Nothing really. The Intel controller is a tiny bit faster.

If you're running your drives of the Gigabyte controller then you can change the Intel to AHCI and then install the drivers for it on next boot. After the drivers have installed and rebooted you can then move the drives over onto the ICH8R.
