I have an old pc that i use to play around with ubuntu on. However my friend recently broke his computer and I want to lend him this computer, but of course he wants windows.

Ideally I want to dual boot win xp with ubuntu, but all guides I have seen detail dual booting with windows already installed, not the other way round.

Is it as simple as shrinking the linux ext3 partition, and throwing in the winxp cd installing on new space and installing grub as a boot loader??

Yeah, after you have installed windows again to the new partition. You will need to somehow boot back into a linux environment (prolly using a livecd (chroot) or recovery disk to mount your root partition) and reinstall grub manually like that.
