At least one distributor of computer componets in the UK has the GeForce 7900 GX2 graphics cards in stock, however, no one can buy such a board, as the item is “strictly to be sold with systems only”, which means that enthusiasts who assemble their computers themselves cannot create systems with four graphics chips and enjoy increased performance with quad SLI technology.

Xxxxxxxxxxx a popular online store in England, recently added the GeForce 7900 GX2 graphics card that features two GeForce 7900-series graphics processors and 1GB of GDDR3 memory into its price-list. The board is claimed to be supplied by XFX and has xxx-xxxxx-xxxxxxxx product code.

The store did not note the price of the XFX GeForce 7900 GX2 at press time, however, The Inquirer web-site claims that the part cost roughly £583 ($916, €752) initially. At this point the graphics board can only be purchased with system, which costs £4436 ($7768, €6364).

Nvidia Corp. confirmed that it had begun to ship GeForce 7900 GX2 graphics cards, which are required to build quad SLI systems with four graphics processing units, but said that the boards are only to be used by system integrators. However, eventually the company may let its partners to provide the appropriate dual-chip quad SLI hardware to retail customers.

“We are selling quad SLI configurations (using GX2 cards) via system vendors only because they require a bit more attention to proper integration of components (especially chassis, cooling, and power supplies), and we want to be sure end-users get the best experience with the first quad SLI systems. Eventually, we will sell the cards through retail, after we get some of the infrastructure items in order,” said Nick Stam, a spokesman for Nvidia Corp.

Quad SLI allows to turn on 32x antialiasing, the maximum level possible today, or to play the latest games in 2560x1600 resolution.

overkill imo - i doubt people need four top end graphics cards, probs just it sounds pretty for people who spend 4k on a pre build :p

id rather have a nice chilly1 mach 2 for that sort of money :D

Too many people have too much dispossable income these days, young chaps with no wife and kids to look after, most without lady friends taking their cash so they're spending obsurd amounts of money on crap that has no bang for buck at all, which will be worth less than half in a years time.
Infact you dont need disposable income these days, get yourself a credit card then another then another, thats why all these people are getting into 30K+ debt buying crap then act all surprised when they find out how much the figure is (whats that tv show called on bbc3).

Choice and progression is always a good thing. No one is forcing anyone to buy these so I dont see the fuss.
The move towards graphics cards with either 2 chips (first) and then 2 cores is inevitable :)

I guess if that type of money is nothing to you then you might as well have the best. I had a look on the website of the people selling them and you can save £700 by not having the paintjob on the case!

Everyone to their own ay. I had the spare cash id buy what i want a Subru. But the next guy might want one of them rigs, so be it. ITs his Crash as mine is mine, well most the time unless the bank had anythink to do with it.

Its only a waste of cash to the next guy, not the person who wants it. ;)

CPU limited to the hilt so theres no point, and you have to get the PhysX card to go with em, so add another £200+ onto that. :p

There will be ppl who will buy em though, i bet if these guys had em on pre-order, the orders would be flying in. :D

Nice, have you tested the PhysX card or isn't there anything to test it with?

Yes it comes with a DEMO where you can blast bricks and its pretty damn cool. Also a couple of games have been patched that a few were getting excited over but I've not looked at those yet.

That demo also works on PC's without a Physx Card ;)
