I am going to Duxford next month for the flying legends display. Any hints and tips for taking fotys of small, fast moving aeroplanes?
I have a Canon 350d, kit lens and Sigma 70-300 zoom.
Hi I have been to many displays at Duxford as it is only a couple of miles from my house .
The best place to take photos from is the grass bank behind the Land Warfare hall right on the western end of the airfield. The reason is that the crowd line kinks to the south just infront of the American Hanger. This means that you get much closer to the center line of the display & hence get closer to the aircraft. You should be able to see what I mean on this map
In the big tail chase sequences the aircraft will be flying almost over your heads. The only downside is that the area will get very very busy very early.
Whith regards to camera settings I have a Nikon so things might be slightly different but I would go for something like:-
AF-C
Shutter priority 1/320 (Dont go much faster or you will start to freeze the props.
I run the AF from a seperate button to the shutter release to seperate the exposure & AF functions. I dont know if you can do this on a Canon.
You will be shooting into the sun for some of it so I would use center weighted metering as well.
