I've got some dvd backups (files not an iso) on my server and I want to play them through windows 7 mce > 360. Anyone know how?

Oh ok. So presumably .vob ? Anyway you can convert them with some sort of video converter. I use Xilisoft Video Convert Ultimate as it has lots of formats. Just google a free one and find out what formats MC can play, then convert it to that. So .AVI or .WMV. :)

I too want to keep my DVD's in their original format so effectively copying the files in their native format into various directories on the hard disk of my server but the problem is that very few devices outside a PC running Media Centre will see them and play them and the PS3 or XBox360 simply doesn't see them or can't play them in my experience. I would love a solution around this that doesn't mean converting all of my DVD's to another form such as XVid etc.

Any ideas?

You can play the vob files directly in Windows 7 MCE, you just need to add the folder with the vob files into the Movie Libary in MCE (right click mouse or i on the remote) If you want the cover to be displayed put the xml file for the dvd from www.dvdxml.com in the movie folder.

I have it set up with a main DVD folder and in that all the movies named in a folder each which contain the video_ts folder with the vob files.

I don't know if this will then work on a 360 as I don't have one I suspect it will though as it shares the dvds to other PCs automatically.

If you use TVersity with a PS3 it will play the vob files this should work with a xbox360 aswell.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got the Video_TS (DVD) playing in windows 7 MCE through the dvd library section but it doesn't work through the 360 unfortunately.

I can still use ps3 media server, tversity might be better though as it saves you're place.
