Not knowing of any local mechanics, and not wanting to pay BMW any more money to check out the problem with my car, i'm hoping someone here will maybe be familiar and have a ball park figure of how expensive this might be to repair...

backstory is: 2 months ago my car failed MOT due to blowing exhaust. Kwik Fit replaced front section of exhaust and subsequently passed MOT. since then it's been making ever more disturbing noises, so i took it to bmw. they checked it out and tell me the front section of exhaust is still blowing near where it clips to some thing called the manifold. so i take it back to kwik fit, they check it and replace the front section of the exhaust /again/ and the cat heat shield as it was loose (for free this time). noise persists and the manager of kwik fit tells me it's actually the manifold that's blowing, which is something they can't repair.

now, i'm curious about two things. 1. could they have damaged the manifold while replacing the exhaust section? and 2. how big a job is replacing a 'manifold' on this car?

i know it's touch obscure, but any advice will be gratefully received

£100 labour plus the cost of a second hand manifold from a independent BMW specialist.

http://www.fabdirect.com/ - For said used manifold.

From a BMW dealer double the labour charge - its about a 2 hour job - I dread to think what BMW would charge for a new e36 manifold! .
