E46 climate display

Oe Noes!

One side is easy to change the other side requires fiddling - It's been raining and sleeting outside so I'd rather not get the bulbs wet and anyway, they're the small wedge sidelight running bulbs so can be changed when the weather is dry, not like I won't be seen since the xenons are on all the time anyway.

There's a photodiode next to the lights knob:

I noticed that for the first time earlier, wondered what that was!

Khaan, yours is broken too then. The screen on the radio directly above dims exactly the same as the obc display does, the climate one doesn't AT ALL.

So what are you saying, that because my CC display doesn't dim it's broken? First time I've ever heard that and I've heard a few things :p

As I said, it only dims (with the OBC display) if the knurl wheel is anything below the top setting and that's only because the top setting is the default brightness of the OBC/CC display when the lights are off although the OBC display changes on its own anyway due to the amount of light getting in to the cabin.

So therefore unless there is some solid hard evidence that says the CC display must dim along with the OBC as well when the lights are on even when the brightness wheel is set to the top setting then there is nothing broken surely...

Why on earth WOULDN'T it dim the same as every other display in the car? Why are you so adamant that something totally illogical is correct?

What about your Radio LCD screen? That should dim too when the lights are turned on in the E46 even if the dial is turned all the way up

Yes, it does, exactly the same brightness as the OBC display. ONLY the CC display DOESN'T dim, I've no idea how it has been so hard to explain this.

It seems illogical that it works on all other devices but the CC to me, it seems very unlikely that by fault, some would dim and not others over more than one car.

Sounds like it came like this to me.

I don't have a BMW head unit so can't say about that display, my head unit display stays the same brightness at all times.

I understand what Clarkey is saying but I'm saying none of my displays (on this and my old e46) (CC or OBC) dim when left at the default settings. If I change the knurl wheel that adjusts brightness of the displays THEN the displays (both CC and OBC) dim when turning on the lights and that's only because the default brightness for the OBC and CC display is the top setting for the wheel anyway so logically the display would dim since the wheel is set at a lower brightness than the default setting.

Edit*
See, Iaind gets it!

Write in plain English please, I don't' understand your point. I am 100% certain that it is faulty, doesn't look like i'll find a solution here though.

Jesus, give me strength!!!! THE OTHER DISPLAYS DO DIM, THE CC DOESN'T.

On my car you mean, going by my video above? Yes they dim but ONLY once I've adjusted the knurl wheel to a lower setting from the default setting. Which was the whole point in the video, to show when they all dim and when they don't.

Jeeez!

No, thats just it. The interior lights ARE meant to dim when the lights are turned on irrespective of the dimmer knurl wheel.

Robbie, if you stereo doesn't dim, then you haven't wired in the orange cable correctly, whose soul purpose is to DIM the headunit when the lights are turned on, OR the knurl wheel is turned.

Thank god somebody has something going on in their head.

There is no individual orange cable to wire, everything is pre-wired to the BMW<>ISO adapter and you just plug it in between the aftermarket HU and the car connector. The HU display has no adjustment for brightness either, only colour of display and button lights and it doesn't dim on this car and didn't on the last acr it was in either!

According to the bimmerwikki and Emtec BMW specialist the light sensor adjusts the radio and OBC display brightness (no mention of climate control display) if the ambient light levels in the cabin warrant it when the headlights are turned on. Test it by shining the torch from the glovebox directly at it at night with the headlights on. Since my car doesn't have a BMW radio that only leaves the OBC display, which I have previously confirmed does adjust based on ambient light.

So yes, I apologise for saying I was sure they didn't dim at all but I was right in that there isn't really a "fault" since it's all down to ambient light levels and what the light sensor is sending to the car.

Do the torch test and see to confirm!

Right, confirmation.

Clarkey and Lucero are correct, Kaaaaaaahn is completely wrong.

When its dark and you switch on the lights, the climate panel dims along with everything else, slightly. The climate panel is not brighter than the other parts of the display.

Well, if you ever stumble across an explanation of why the CC display would fail to dim then I'd appreciate it if you let me know.

Perhaps there's a loose connection, is there a seperate cable for the CC like the wire Lucero mentioned?
