OK,

Tonight the engine warning light has come on in my E60; oil change is due in 700 miles and engine check is due on 1200 miles. There are no control messages.

Is this normal behaviour because of the imminent services, or would it be something else?

I only had a service message come up when mine was due for a service. Might be worth getting a code reader on it. Also is the message on all the time or is it intermittant, that could point to a sensor playing up if its coming and going.

I've only driven it about 6 miles this evening and the light was on all the time (this is the yellow light in the control cluster). I turned it off and back on again, in true helpdesk style, and it made no difference.

This is not normal and there is a fault with the car which should not wait until the next service. The light is often triggered because 'emissions values are outside preset range' or something (cba to check the handbook) so its normally related to sensors, coil packs, etc.

You need a fault code read PDQ :)

Doh, not old enough for cheaper labour rate either. Suspect you'll be billed 30 minutes labour for diagnostics so circa £50.

I use BMW for all my servicing but I'll only send it there for repairs if I know whats wrong first, you tend to get into the realms of writing a blank check if you are not careful.

My engine malfunction light came on a couple of weeks ago on my E90, Took it in on friday, (also needed its service)...Cant remember what part neeeded replacing tho, will check in the morn on the invoice, something, throttle something :\

Unfortunately I've not had chance to look for a reputable indy yet. My Volvo indy specialist have said they do BMW as well, but they are primarily Volvo. Would prefer to find someone who specialises in BMWs.

Do not take it to BMW then. They work to the 'guess' method principle unless the computer flags a fault. That and issuing duplicate keys to M variant models without the owners say so.

If your car has reasonable mileage and good service history, depending on the fault you can still make an out of warranty claim via any main dealer. They will contact BMW for you, check your cars chassis number and BMW will assess the fault. If successful they will pay a % of the repair. Each manufacurer differs slightly, some will pay parts & labour some parts only etc...

After the third brake light on my mrs out of warranty 06 CLK fell into the boot lid (another story) Mercedes replaced the whole unit last week FOC.

I have previously claimed 100% with BMW and Mercedes and 75% I think with Vauxhall.

Worth a try.

When the engine management light came on on a previous car of mine, it turned out to be a faulty air mass sensor. I was told when the EMU detects a fault it starts a protection profile so not to cause engine damage? hence the warning light. It would be OK to drive but not for long periods. Fuel economy was crap too.

In a bit of a pickle at the moment though, I need to have a car right now and most of the indys don't provide courtesy cars.

Am ringing round at the moment.

The car is due a service anyway by the sounds of it. Certainly if my E60 was showing 700 miles to an oil change and 1200 to the service, it would already be booked in by now.

However, 700 miles to me is often a weeks driving.

Get it to BMW for the service, and don't tell them about the light. "well it was fine when I bought it in...." :p

It is already booked in, for the 11th of December.

However, I want to get the warning light looked at ASAP. Normally I would be more relaxed about such things, but current circumstances mean that I have to have a car in full working order.

Have now found a garage who can take it on the 4th and provide a loan car. Think that's the best I'm going to get at this notice.
