Hi Guy's

Ive had my trusty e6400 ,4 Gig GeIL 6400 & Gigabyte DS3 V3.3 for 2 years.

I bought everything from OC and clocked it on day 7 after its initial burn in period.

Its never ever let me down running at 3.2 Gig ticking away.:p

My quandary is ive just bought a 4890, my 1st ATI purchase from OC and whilst its due to arrive on Monday (tomorrow) I'm already thinking about buying a CPU or even ditching the board and CPU and starting afresh.. :D

I'm into Astro photography so 200+ meg of Canon RAW files aligning stacking its important to have a swift rig.

I also like COD & ARMA II so games on cloudy nights is important especially now its become darker.

What do you recon? New CPU or new MOB/CPU & RAM? :) Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600???

If i go down the new kit road my budget at the mo is £350..

Cheers as always...

How about something like this? You should easily get the cpu to 3.4GHz+ on stock volts or up to 4GHz+ with extra volts.
EDIT: you could also save on RAM and use the ones you currently got

If you're going to spend £350, then it seems pointless spending it on old tech?

I would suggest a P55 board with the new core i5 750 and 4gb of DDR3 memory, something like this.

If yu can add another £140 get the 860 which has Hyperthreading which should be of use for your astro photography usage e.g grapic handling.
The gd80 is a pricey motherboard but its receiving very good reviews and the OC genie feature will let you bump the 860 to 3.4-3.5ghz stable with 1 button push on the mobo.

wouldnt the i7 920 DO be a better option if hes spending 500£?

his budget is 350, not 500.

Why can nobody on this forum ever keep to the budget listed.

People do within £20 normally, but considering his pc usage a chip with HT may be of more benefit for him hence the suggestion of a overbudget rig.

Besides wouldnt you wait a month for example and pool more cash and buy a more expensive rig that will suit your needs more or buy now and get something which may not meet your needs fully.

Its a suggestion, im not holding a gun to his head

You could probably opt for a cheaper 1366 mobo then the asus deluxe anyhow, easily drop that by £50 with a Gigabyte mobo.

Having an i7 would be fantastic for the photography aspect; I do feel that based off your £350 budget an i5 would be the best route, especially over the quad core range. Unfortunately I'm not an amd pro so I couldn't suggest anything in the amd range to go with.

+1 to i5
