Well, I've taken the plunge and started to OC my system that i built before Xmas (my first ever build).

System specs:
E6750 2.66Ghz
Asus P5K-E/WiFi
4GB (2x2GB) Geil Black dragon DDR2 800MHz
8800GTS 512MB
Thermalright Ultra120 + Noctua NF-P12 fan
Samsung Spinpoint SATA HDD
couple of SATA optical drives

All encased in a lovely Antec P182 case (with extra 120 Noctua NF-P12 fan)

Stock temps:
idle - 27°C
load - 45°C (prime95)
happy my first build seems quite cool :D

Over clocked last night and have got the following:
3.2Ghz (400FSB * 8)
Ram is 1:1 so at 800Mhz and timings still default at 5-5-5-15.

OC temps:
idle - 28 - 30°C
load - 51°C (prime95)
Are these temps fine?
I Have left speed stepping on as no need to run max clock when browsing the web so i guess thats why temps haven't increase a lot during idle.
Vcore volts seemed to have jumped to 1.4 as i set it on auto. Do you think i should reduce volts or leave on auto?
Running Orthos this morning and will check on it after work for errors/stability.

Think i could push it more? I don't really want a hot system. Anything else you guys recommend me doing? no screen shots right now as at work.
Any advice appreciated :D

Take the volts off Auto and set them manually.

Which software are you getting the temps from?

Using CoreTemp 0.94 (i think) And using Everest Ultimate edition.
all running on Vista Home premium 64bit.

What would you say are safe volts. i would like to take the volts down a bit as to not generate as much heat.

In that case your temps are grand.

If you're happy with 3.2ghz then set the voltage to 1.425v in BIOS (it will be lower when you get into Windows) and test it. If it's stable then you can start lowering the voltage.

How does manually setting the volts affect the speed stepping? (i would like this option kept on). Whilst idle/browsing the net the cpu is de-clocked to something like 2.2ghz (366fsb x 6multi). Wont 1.425 be too much volts for that?

Nah it doesn't affect Speedstep.

1.425v in BIOS will be less than your current 1.4v in Windows anyway.

Think i could get away with volts around 1.3v? possibly 1.35v?
When i get home today i'll run some more test and hopefully get some screen shots posted. Thanks for the advice cob :)

1.35v may be a little low. But it depends on your chip.

Personally I'd be trying to up the clock speed rather than lowering your vcore ;)

Well i decided to follow your advice and pushed the CPU further.
Currently have it at 3.6Ghz (450*8) with vcore manually set to 1.425.
Didn't think the ram would push well but been playing CoD4 for 3hrs straight no problems.

Running Orthos i get the following temps
idle = 32°C
Load = 58°C

I think i can go further but probably stick to this current O/C as i'm already happy with a 1ghz gain!

thanks, but i've just taken a look at your OC in your sig and can't believe your lovely temps! Maximum of 54°C! Thats excellent. What cpu cooler are using?
I might overclock more but in no rush atm. 4Ghz will be my next target :D

Well reduced the voltage down to 1.375 and its still stable. This helped reduce a temps a little. Anyway if I wanna reach 4Ghz, would 500FSB x 8 be too much stress/strain on tte Mobo?

Wow we have a similar system.
I have:
e6750,
2gb geil black dragon,
Samsung spinpoint 320gb 16mb buffer,
Asus P5K.

I havent overclocked yet, im looking at getting to 3gh to 3.2gh on stock cooler.
What cooler do you have?

Yup 8-9hrs small FTTs using the latest version of Orthos.
My CPU cooler is a Thermalright Ultra120 with a Noctua NF-P12 fan. The thermal paste i'm using is Arctic cooling MX-2. I'm quite pleased with my 1st ever build and OC!

Morguk I agree you should be able to overclock to at least 3.2ghz even on stock cooler but dunno what your temps would be.

Yeah i'm quite happy with this right now. The load temp of 58°C is with all my case fans on low. ( I can't stand the noise of anything higher!)
If i set the fans to high i'm able to knock around 3°C off.
