Alright guys,

I'm building a CHEAP PC for my brother and to help him save some money i thought that i could possibly sell him my e6750 and I would upgrade to either a Q9450 or Q9550.

now my question is, is it worth it?
My E6750 CPU is running stable 24/7 @ 3.6ghz on air on lower than stock volts. (can't remember the exact volts)

Would i see much benefit going to either of the Q9XXX chips?
I'm a tight ******* so don't want to spend too much money and would rather get an i7 system down the line. But to help my brother with his PC build I thought that this could be an opportunity where we both benefit.
Computer use is mainly gaming (CoD4:MW2, WoW, L4D and a few others) and just general video watching and internet surfing.

If it's deemed not worth the outlay of £70 to upgrade my chip then I will have to source a cheap 775 chip for my bro.

What motherboard do you currently have? Also what do you normally do with your PC?

Bear in mind that the Q9*** chips are expensive and not likely to get much cheaper (when bought new). The Q9400 (the one with less cache) is £146 (almost the same price as an i5) and a Q9550 costs £206, the same as an i7 920.

Mobo is an ASUS P5KE. I happily have my RAM running 1:1 atm.
I would be looking at a 2nd hand chip (if anyone haves 1 for sale /wave) so cost won't be as great hopefully.

I mainly use my PC for gaming and general internet surfing and downloading off newsgroups. Nothing intensive but was looking at a short term future proofing for quad core games (if there will be any).

That makes sense. For Q9*** CPUs, keep an eye out for E0 stepping Q9550 chips - as they overclock fantastically.

You probably won't get a massive boost in most games compared to your current 3.6GHz dual core, but as you say - you will have no problems with games that require multi-core CPUs like ARMA2, GTA4 and future games.

thanks.
I;ve seen a Q9450 for sale but wondered would I be better off getting a Q9550?

Also anyone know if the new Aliens vs Predator game with take advantage of multi core processors? i know it will utilise DX11.

I went from an E6750 to a Q9450 & didn't regret it.

I use my PC for mostly gaming & browsing but I do encode some video stuff too (TV episodes to watch on my phone mostly). The encoding is without a doubt better & games do see an increase in FPS. There are some gaming benchmarks out there that show the 2 chips together if you look for them.

I have the Q9450 (C0 stepping) OC'ed to 3.6GHZ & although I'm thinking of upgrading to an i7 I'm happy with it.

The Q9450 is a good chip and overclocks well, but they all use the same stepping as the older Q9550 (C0/1). The newer, even better overclocking E0 stepping is only available in later Q9550 and all Q9650 chips.

However, if you get a good deal on a Q9450 - go buy it. It is still a brilliantly performing CPU that runs cool and overclocks great.

thanks for the advise.
