Eating breakfast at work

I have noticed recently that a good chunk of my colleagues wait until they get to work before eating their breakfast. They wait for about half an hour after starting, then go to the kitchen and bring back toast, cereal etc to eat at their desks. I think this is disgusting and pretty unprofessional -surely the norm is to eat in your own house, then go to work ready to work? I would love the extra 15 minutes in my bed this would give me, but I am being paid to work, not to eat.
Does anyone else have this?

I agree to an extent. I come about 15 mins late to work usually, but other people get to work on time, but spend 15 mins + making their breakfast in the kitchen... and I'm the one that looks bad!

I eat my breakfast, lunch and if I'm working late, my dinner at my desk. There is nowhere else I can go to eat unless I want to go sit in the hospital restaurant which I'd rather not do as it's noisy and full of people whining about stuff.

i think what OP Is getting at is eating when you are supposed to be working and not necessarily that "eating at the desk" is bad.

Meh, my boss gets in just after 9 and proceeds to spend half an hour eating his breakfast and browsing his personal emails so... And then the rest of the staff spend their time chatting until half past anyway.:p

Informal office >* Far more fun and probably more work done as well. I feel sorry for those that have a real regimented office. :(

Similar at my works, people might might come in at 8:45 not really start work just go on the net then as soon as it hits 9 they drift off for a drink to the canteen for 10 mins then come back to their desk.

Same at lunch, lunch finishes at 13:00 so again they might be on the net till 13:00 then again drift off for a drink and come back 10-15mins later.

Doesn't really bother me but probably would be more respectful to them who's working to take their lunch time drink break during lunch.

My whole team goes to the canteen and spend at least 15 mins eating breakfast away from our desks each morning.

I guess if you saw that happening you'd have a coronary.

:(

That sounds absolutely disgusting. I think I'd puke if I saw that.

That's just bizarre. You think it's disgusting seeing people eat ? I think you must have a problem, how on earth do you cope at a restaurant or a family dinner ?

My only problem with people eating in the office is if they eat something that stinks out the office.

people were doing this where i work so they banned eating while working and no using the vending machines for food/drinks the first hour, the last hour and the hour before and after break

I can maybe see an argument against it if people eating their breakfast at their desk is detrimental to the work getting done during the day i.e. you're having to take up the slack created by someone not doing their job due to taking breaks. If however all the work is getting done then it's not really inconveniencing you and so I don't see the problem - I'm presuming of course that you could equally choose to eat your breakfast at work with no repercussions.

Quite a few people seem to do it at my workplace. I've been tempted to take in some weetabix in the past, but usually have enough time to eat in the mornings before I leave for work. I don't really see the problem TBH, it's not like it's going to take much longer than 5 minutes, same as getting a cuppa really (unless you go for a full fry up!).

I eat breakfast at my desk a few days a week as I go to the gym in the mornings before work. However, I'm in well before 9am so it's not to save time.

As we have a cheap breakfast canteen at work a lot of people tend to eat breakfast at their desks.....I don't really care as long as they don't make a mess.

Me and a couple of colleagues tend to go for a bacon sandwich on Fridays from the site canteen. Seeing as I'm supposed to work 7hrs on Fridays and I'm normally in for 9hrs I don't see a problem taking the 20mins to go there, get it, come back and eat it. I don't see an issue in doing that.

I do know other colleagues who have cereal at work each morning. in most cases it means that they leave home 15mins earlier, rather than having extra time in bed, to allow more time for their commute and to avoid traffic. Normally if they come in and find there is something urgent happening then they will skip breakfast.

I used to wake up for work at 5:45am. If I ate breakfast here, my entire body clock changed. I would end up craving lunch at around 11am and be hungry again by 4pm. Instead, I woke up, got straight on the train, fell asleep, and got breakfast when I got to work at 8:45am.
