I'm selling something on eBay of substantial value, I've added all the bidder requirements that eBay offers e.g. credit card on file, has paypal account... however you cannot block 0 feedback bidders. Now since this guy managed to bid, is there anything I should be wary about? Because he's registered since October 2008 but has no feedback regarding purchases or sales.

What do I need to ask this guy?

We was all once 0 feedback buyers! It is a risk! But remember you have to start somewhere. I see you are selling something of great value, so maybe my advice doesn't apply?

Everyone has to start somewhere...

Ask for payment via something such as bankers draft.
Send the item recorded delivery.
Mark the product in some way that he can't send back a different, faulty one.

tbh if your item is worth a few quid, you may emjoy the tree that is made out of something that you can chew, as it is all up front.

True, but the OP said the item had "substantial value". Most first time ebayers won't go for expensive items.

Surely it depends what it is?

I've never used eBay but if something was available that I couldn't get anywhere else or was a huge saving over new or something then I wouldn't just not bid because i'm new.

Yes, there will always be exceptions, but I bet the absolute vast majority of first-time ebayers will bid on something simple, like a DVD, or something <£50.

It's a laptop. I cancelled his bid first time and then he replied...

"hi there, i bid for this laptop and it cancelled i dont know why i place another bid please let me know if there's a problem with the laptop or my bid. regards."

He made another bid when he sent this reply. Just asking him for shipping details to provide some indication of how legit this all is.

You're selling a laptop on Ebay?

I hope you've lubed up.

Why not use the MM on here? You might not get as much but the chances of trouble are a hell of a lot less. :)

If he's bidding, Let him bid and dont send the item until payment is recieved. I dont see how you can be scammed.

Stolen credit card used > Credit card company issue a chargeback to Paypal > Paypal unhappy they've lost money > Paypal take your money> You now have no money and no laptop

I should have, but I think I just won't get much. :p

Yep... I might just ban this guy from bidding on my auction. Let's see what he says. I've not been scammed before being a member since Jan '06... and I don't really want to be...

If you just put clearly in your auction that anyone with FB less than X will get their bids cancelled then i'm not sure how he can complain.

Given what you're selling i'd take no chances, electrical goods are notorious for this kinda thing on Ebay! :p

Or even just claiming the item never arrived/was faulty. Paypal are getting really bad at siding with the buyer and reversing transactions when it's fairly clear they're scamming.

You can block people who dont have feedback over so many and other things.

not true im afraid, you can impose buyer requirments but you cant stop a 0 feedback bidder if he/she has met them

quote from ebay
Have received 2 Unpaid item Strike(s) within 1 month(s)
Have a feedback score equal to or lower than -1
Have a feedback score of 0 or lower and no credit card on file

you could hang on to the item for around 5 days before posting if you are unsure about the payment, i sold a phone once, the guy contacted me after auction begging and offering extra cash to get it in the post same day, alarm bells rang and so did the phone around 3 hours later, it was paypal informing me that i had been payed by a stolen credit card and they had all ready removed the funds from my account and told me not to post the item
