Ebay: Faulty item return (im the seller)

Lesson for future, as already mentioned above: Do not get paid by paypal if buyer collecting in the first place. There will be a record of the buyer paying you, yet you have no proof of having handed the item over to him (unless you write something down and get him to sign it). Seller could claim item was never received.

Get the laptop, investigate the course if you can proved he coursed it refuse a refund unless he can have prove other wise by a professional third party that he has to pay for.

This goes on in the real world surely pay pal has to respect that?

This is what he put

Hi, the laptop is not fine unfortunately, it keeps cutting out and re booting, I have factory reset this 3 times now, and have lost documents that have cost me a lot of money and time, probably in excess of £1000 pounds!

I will have to send it back to you, I have tried my best and spent a lot of time on it, in fact too much time. I suspect this is why you sold the machine.

Could you confirm the address to send back to and when you receive could you issue a full refund.

Is it address@@@@@ and what is the full name to put on the package??

I will send special delivery when you confirm receipt of email.

The claims that it's lost him £1000+ is clearly a lie.

he paid via paypal and collected

Okay, first thing - that was a very stupid thing to do. Never do this through EBay as it's so damn easy for the buyer to abuse. You basically have no proof the item was ever received.

Either go cash, or send it. Don't do Paypal and collection.

Now, second thing - i'd ask him to return it and check that it's the same laptop. Then have a small go at fixing it (might just be dodgy software or Windows being a pleb, nothing major and easy to fix).

If you fix it, great - he can have it back. If not, refund him.

You don't have to offer a refund but unfortunately Paypal will side with the buyer despite you being a private seller which is why I gave up using ebay before leaving the UK as it seems everyone expects to buy used second hand items these days as if they are brand new!

The last few items on ebay I sold which were electronics I always photographed the serial numbers and in the case of computer parts made sure I had a photo of the serial number on the motherboard.

Nothing to stop someone buying a laptop or computer off ebay as they need a new motherboard, swapping it round then getting a refund off Paypal  Paypal is a disgusting company and I'm so glad people here don't use it!
