Wasn't it the porn industry that ended the HD disc format war back in 2006? everyone was jumping between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray... because it wasn't until late 2007 I got my first modern console due to this. HD-DVD took a quick death when this all happened. As I remember friends always messaging me, it's this, this is it... then they started offloading their HD-DVD players.

The DVD wasn't at war with anything. It replaced VHS and was better in every way. When HD-DVD and Blu-Ray came out, I'd say most people I knew still had dial-up. Some had 256kbit/512kbit broadband. I'm not saying it didn't exist but I don't remember digital streaming being the done thing to watch films then.
