Indeed! None of the PMPO rubbish or the "500W RMS" that logitech throw out with the Z5500. Considering the S550 is only 280W you would expect it to be much quieter than the Z5500 but its just not. The S550 are hugely superior, louder and more refined. I feel that you can atleast trust Edifier when it comes to ratings as they more than deliver compared to the competition.
Ill have a nice little review coming out on these at some point over the next couple of days. I was that impressed I bought a set myself and currently have them set up with the ipod.
A Xonar would be a good bet indeed however due to the level of control with the base, mids and highs etc you may get away with an onboard solution. Watch this space as I shall have a look in to this to find out if it really does make that much of a difference.

i bought the r1600t speakers but it came with EU plug so cant use them atm, have to buy a new UK lead
