Need some advise on self catering accommodation for Edinburgh Uni. My brother is starting this year and I am trying to sort his application out.

Which are the best flats in terms of location, how modern they are, clean etc? The Edinburgh Accommo website is crap and just gives prices.

Um shouldn't he have already done all this? Most people are waiting for their conformation now.

It really depends on what he is studying and where the buildings are in Edinburgh since the campus is spread out.

Probably not if it's conditional ;). You're lucky you are :p.
I'm not i had no chance, even with an unconditional. I live so close to the buildings it takes longer to get to them from the halls than my house.

Actually it is quite unusual for people in Scotland to have conditional places as we have our results well before applying ;).

Felix - from what I remember, most of the self-catering places are pretty much the same. There should be a map in the book with all the different places marked. If he is studying chemistry, biology or physics (this is from 3 years ago though), he will want somewhere between Kings Buildings and George Square eg on Causewayside. Otherwise he'll be in George Sq all year, so further north will also be suitable. To give an idea of scale, it took me 10-15mins to walk from the Pollock entrance on Holyrood Park Rd to George Sq.

Shame it isn't like that here tbh.

She only lives a couple of miles away from the halls, and preference is given to those who live outside Edinburgh. If you live in the city, generally a very good reason is needed before you can get accomodation, as there aren't actually enough places for all of the first years.

lol

She means she is staying at home as she won't get a place in halls because of being so close to the University.

At least thats what I hope anyway. :p

I'm not waiting for confimation of a place in halls...thought that was what you ment

If you get your brother to contact the accomadation services they will be able to give you more information. Most places are quite modern and have very good facilities. The only unfortunate things are that you can't choose your neighbours or who you live with.

Oh, anyone else studying/going to be studying there? Just waiting for confirmation of accommodation...Moved house during the process, so it's all got very difficult, but should all be on track for september :)

To be honest, I don't even remember where I applied to for accom. now...somewhere near the HSS bits.

Yes, i know that one or two people are going there from the forums but i couldnt tell you who.

Everything Vixen has said is pretty much spot on. I'm not a student there anymore but had 5 amazing years there, really missing the city. Hopefully I'll get a job back up there once I get my licence, fingers crossed!

And just to pimp my old club for all the new students, if any of you ever fancied being a pilot then a really cheap way to do it is to join the Edinburgh uni gliding club, check out their website here for what they do and where they meet. Its the best way to see scotland! :)

Same :D, i'm unconditional too, but even if youre conditional you should have had this sorted out in february when the accomodation website opened up for the year!

You definately a bit late, but still possibly in with a chance.

I had some friends in Darrock? court.... was really nice there!

Also had some in Pollock, the food was a bit rubbish iirc. I'd never stay in catered student accomodation anyway. Blah.

I've went for pollock, catered for the first year, but only because it's easier to meet more people. Plus one less thing to worry about cooking, i know i'll get sick of the poo food probably, but it's easy and i can put up with it (and i'm being completely riped off at the same time :D)

Yes he is very late at doing the application hence the reason I am sorting it for him.

What I am after is which building are habitable and which are awful...and then put him in the awful ones;)

Oh btw, blackstar have you got anything through the post yet, forms to fill in etc...?

I still need to send my loan off :o, i know thats late, oopsies/
I got my welcome pack the other day, already filled in my form for my student card but not had that back yet. I've done all my loan things and have got everything back for that.

The welcome pack contains things for getting your freshers week pack, we all need a mini Edinburgh Uni meet during freshers week :)
