Edinburgh

See, even though London's big I never find that much to do in it that's different :p

I think Edinburgh's nicer to look at.

Christmas-Newyear would probably be most romantic Fox, the place is normally very festive (cut backs this year, but I can't see all the lights going).

It'd be busy though. There would also be sales, but Edinburgh isn't best for shopping.

Any particular reason? Hotel prices are coming up fine, and I'd be leaving on New Years Eve so wouldnt get caught up in all that.

Hotels will be more negociable end of November as its pretty busy around Christmas and New Year, and even with cuts there will be still a lot of people around at New Year. Though just thinking about it, its hardly a busy city anyway so will probably be fine.

Fox go in December, when the German Market starts. I don't have many others to compare it to but it's always been really good fun. Also check out the dessert place on the east end of Princes St (the one with the horse), it has literally the best ice cream you will ever eat.

EDIT - I should add that this is when the city gets redonculously busy and very hectic. As others said, park up somewhere and take the bus, it really is just so much easier especially if you don't know the streets.

Loved it when me and my girlfriend went. Biohazard you were a big help we went to a lot of places you mentioned.

I enjoyed the castle, she didn't but ended up enjoying it in the end.

We checked out all the free little museums and had a good time (even though it rained constantly)

The castle is cool, there is a geeky money museum which i liked too.

The Museum Of Childhood is around there too, that's worth a visit for the nostalgia if nothing else. The Camera Obscura is also interesting from what I remember although it has been a number of years since I was in.

Weirdly the thing we found hardest was finding decent restaurants, in London you cant move for them, yet Edinburgh we found ourself in Pizza Express one lunch time as we literally couldnt find anywhere decent to eat. Definitely research food places before leaving as this really let our trip down.

There's quite a few decent restaurants but they're not always in the most obvious of places, it also depends on whether you want fine dining or just good and tasty food. The Witchery for instance is quite highly recommended but you may need to book a fair bit in advance, particularly if you're going to be there over a busy holiday period.

Hogmanay is a big deal as I'm sure you've noticed but if the hotel prices are fine for the moment and you're not actually going to be staying beyond the Eve then it's unlikely to matter too much. You'll probably be able to go ice skating in Princes Street Gardens at the end of December if you wanted.
