I got the engine management light come on in my Seat Ibiza, I took it to the dealer who said the EGR valve would need replacing £230 in total!!

Ive read about, and it seems to suggest that this isnt ESSENTIAL for making the car run smoothly and safely.

Anyone else know about these?

When up to temperature, at around ~2k rpm, and light revs, the EGR recirculates exhaust gasses back into the engine - where unburnt gasses are recycled. This gives a slight emissions lowering, and it also (somehow) cools the temperature of the combustion chamber!

For my Prelude, an EGR error light is usually one of two things - the EGR valve itself has clogged up, and is not opening as it should, fix = take it off, clean it liberally with carb/brake cleaner, replace. Secondly, it could be the actual vacuum solenoid that activates it is becoming old/weak, fix = replace it ;)

These might be worth checking first - especially if you've got a service manual (owner's clubs/forums often have them in a sticky/tech-help section)

Probably just very dirty - take it apart and give it a clean. If it is stuck in the recirculation position it could cause your turbo to overheat.

Mine is only the 1.2 though, so no turbos or anything, its not about increasing or hampering performance, im just wondering if its safe to not replace this??
