Installed the X-Fi fine and plugged in the headphones as you normally would and... nothing. Looked at the creative control panel and all settings seem fine for headphones, and nothing is muted. Am I er... missing something mind-numbingly obvious?

Yeah the Xfi control panels are fairly labyrinthine, keep trying stuff. I found that some settings are not applied until I close the panel and return to the desktop, which makes the whole problem-solving process even longer ...In my settings for the extreme gamer I'm sure there is a setting to automatically mute speakers if headphones are plugged in. Also install the drivers that came on the disc with the soundcard instead of downloading the ones off the site as the site ones are really basic and the ones on the disc that come with the soundcard have a lot more features and help you setup speakers etc. I know because I've just had a load of problems with my new extreme gamer and Creative Inspire T7900 7.1 Speaker System. Some of the problems your having are similar to the one's I was experiencing, don't give up just yet
