Electric Hobs, talk to meh.

gas hob > electric hob.

Electric hobs are useless unless you spend a fortune and probably still cost more to run than a gas hob.

Gas hobs are cheaper to run and much much much better to cook on.
Cannot stand electric, it's next to useless, even the expensive ones take forever to heat up and cool down, and you can only control the heat in increments wheras with gas you can apply the exact amount of heat required instantly.
Induction suffers because of the limitation on pans, no cast iron in effect, no ceramic crock pots, only certain kinds of non stick/ stainless pans. Very limiting.

Gas hob, electric fan assisted oven. Best combination for domestic use.

My electric only takes 5 seconds to heat up and it works really well at setting different temps. It did cost a fair bit and I would still have gas for the Hob and an electric oven but I think electric hobs have come quite a way since the older ones.

Gas is much cheaper than electricity.

Though electric hotplates do have advantages in that they can automatically heat to the exact temperature you set and stir the food as well. :D

Electric hobs are **** unless you spend top dollah on them. Stick with the gas hob. Also I doubt you would make any saving going to electric anyway!

My first question to you would be, "Has your current gas hob ceased to function?" If not then it is false economy investing in a new electric hob as you will not see the savings for some considerable time once you factor in the cost of installation and the initial outlay (unless of course you plan to try and flog our old hob somehow). Couple this with the fact that gas hobs aren't exactly heaving on fuel use (something else in your household use is almost certainly causing the high fuel bill) and are widely considered to be better than electric hobs for effective cooking and I would say it is a no brainer to stay with your current hob.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Some interesting developments have occurred since I started this threat, personally speaking.

Last week I spoke to my energy company who have say that we are spending £112 a month on Gas for the last 6 months (accurate reading)...

I am almost livid about this as we have had the central heating OFF since March / April time so for at least 3 of those months we central heating hasn't even been on for those £112 Gas bills per month.

Anyway, yesterday we noticed the boiler was leaking and have just had a plumber come out to inspect it and he says that we need a new boiler. He has told us we cannot use it and that a fire could even have started with the water and electrics.

The repairs to the boiler out weight the cost of getting a new one.

I think we've found out the culprit for our high bills and upon further reading after starting this thread I have found out that gas hobs are actually cheaper than electric ones.

We each have a shower a day and wash the pots up twice / sometimes three times a day which doesn't take long to fill the sink up so £112 p/m is just ridiculous.

Hopefully with a new boiler the prices will be much lower.

With no central heating on and just using the gas oven and hobs, £50 on a payg meter lasts us over 2 months. So I'd say it's definitely down to the boiler leak.

And that it's about 15 years old now I reckon... an Ideal Combi and we've had problems with it since moving here (2009)... the amount of times we've had to call the letting agent to get it sorted, even the guy that runs it says the LL would have been better off buying a new boiler before now.

Also, thinking about it and having read the replies yeah, I should be thankful for a gas hob. Being able to have instant heat and what not is great. I just rushed in thinking that an electric hob would save us a lot on our bills since we do a lot of cooking with the hob.

Looks like, as I've said, that it's the boiler that is to blame.

This x1000

Currently we have electric hops, the only upside is they look nicer and are easier to clean!

Check that you don't have your boiler set to pre heat your water supply. This costs a shed load.

I assume your heating is totally off in the summer?

How many units have you gone through in the last month?

Always electric fan assisted Oven. I think we can say gas hon or high end induction hob these days. But it has to be very high end. The Low end have so few heat settings.

How bad was the leak, surprised you couldn't smell it.

It was a water leak. But I just think that the general condition of the boiler has caused the massive bills.
