Electronic prices going down, what about quality?

As many of you may have noticed that the cost of LCD and Plasma TVs has come down a lot of the last year, Samsung seems to be pushing the marking very hard over the last year and have released a lot of very good affordable products.

For the last 2/3 years my company has mostly been selling Pioneer Screens and a few Sony’s from time to time.

I recently became a authorized Samsung dealer, because they are so cheap and our margins are very small we have been selling quite large numbers of them. However its shocking how many are coming back to us a faulty.
I have never had a single pioneer set sent back due to it being faulty. So my question is, are we just buying crap that will fall to bits in an effort to save a little money or have I just been unlucky (3 out or 9 screens came back last week).

I think you've personally been unlucky and got a bad batch.

My Sammy LCD and 4 of my mates have been working perfectly for a year or 2 now, all still spot on

I know what you mean though, sometimes I am dubious as to how the price of a certain object has been dropped to sacrifice quality.

Personally I'd keep on with the Sammys as they do indeed rock, and then when you get the next shipment in, see if they are still the same.

In the end, it could be stupid end users drop kicking the tv over the room ;)

Possibly a bad batch that you had? I'd leave it a little longer before striking them off completely, I had a Samsung HDTV for a good few months that was fine.

Think the price drops are more due to the fact we've found ways of making things quicker and easier (mass production, robots etc) and also a lot of cheap labour that still does just as good a job.

Would that not just reinforce the point that as Samsung have been caning prices over the last year or two the quality has subsequently dropped from what it was a year or two back?

If you look at my screen, yes.

Look at my folks 42inch one in the lounge, which is 2 months old, then I'd say no :)

I'd tend towards saying that yes, goods are getting a little worse in quality. Our household's current batch of white goods, ranging from when we moved around 6-7 years need to be replaced. Before that, I swear the stuff we previously had were over 10 years old and still good.

i have the impression quality is worsening quite a lot. i have had the last year only more motherboard failures than the last 3 years,

Got a friend who worked at a well known hi-fi shop famous for their small shops and high turnover per square ft and apparently a disgracefully large number of their flat panels fail. People don't seem to care though.

Therefore, what are companies whose product standards were previously good and are now falling?

I presume SOny are still keeping high standards and prices.
