employers requesting facebook logins...

I don't have a Facebook account, but if I did, I'd refuse to even log in myself on their kit, seeing as they could be using a keylogger to capture the details anyway. Show them on your mobile device if you really want to but they have no right to ask for this.

If my place asked me they'd get told to go **** themselves. My profile is also set to private & I'm very anal about the permissions. I've even gone as far to set-up different "lists" that have different permission settings.

Including the "Work" list that is set to show people absolutely nothing :D. I don't actively add people on FB from work or many other places really so when I get a request I just dump them into the purgatory that is the "work" list & claim I never use FB :).

I also make it a habit of going through my wall deleting my old posts every so often, i think there maybe something wrong with me..

I would just like to leave here the same thing proponents of things like CCTV or DNA databases like to say..

If you've nothing to hide you've nothing to fear **

** what a load of ******** that statement always was

I'd politely refuse telling them it's a breach of FB policies and a breach of trust of those people who are on my friends list. Though if a prospective employer was asking for me to share a username and password I'd be wondering exactly what kind of operation they were running. Considering the majority IT departments hammer into all their staff to never under any circumstance disclose passwords (even to their manager). If not allowing them access was the deciding factor in not offering me the job then they aren't an employer I'd care to work for.

I've nothing to 'hide' from any prospective employer. But I do put things on FB that are only shared with friends and it's of a personal nature, not bad in any way just personal, so it's really none of their business.
This.

There is also the argument that your profile contains explicit information regarding your age, gender (okay this one is obvious without), sexuality, marital status and so on -- information that is irrelevant from a legal hiring perspective.

Surely a neater and less confrontational comeback would be. I'm sorry, Facebook is a private friends tool, obviously if I was successful in my application then I would comply with whatever social networking policies you have. If you wish to assess my work links then LinkedIn is for my professional life and contacts....?

A member of my band is a manager of a department and when people apply for jobs he gets his staff to roam the internet finding stuff out about them and makes judgements on it.
He's been doing it for years and no doubt most places do it.

I'm pretty sure most places do it - especially smaller IT based companies.

I actually know someone who trawls the web for the phone numbers / mobile numbers supplied in CV's. He actually tells us about the stuff he finds on people..... One guy applied for a job, but had loads of "strange" stuff for sale on Gumtree - using his mobile number. Needless to say he didn't get an Interview, becuase the company had already made up their mind about what he was like - simply by the pictures of the stuff that was advertised on gumtree

I know a lecturer at a local Uni ( who also assists the police in Computer crime cases ) - he was snowed under around Christmas with calls to local police stations, sorting through FB threats, Indutrial Tribunals etc.... the amount of online stuff has escalated to an unacceptable level over the last few years - and people just can't seem to keep their mouths shut on the internet anymore. From what he was saying - even the police are getting sick of all the stuff they have to deal with in relation to FB, abusive texts etc. Even the schools are getting new starts (12 years old) to sign forms stating the rules on social networking posts etc.

That's ridiculous

I wouldn't give over my facebook details, private info!

Everyone calm down, a 6 year old child could figure out ways round being asked your facebook login. If you can't, you don't deserve any job.

It's probably more sensationalist tripe anyway, maybe a few obscure american companies employing manual labourers. The article didn't even name any companies, he just speculated.

You may as well just deactivate your account.
