Employment - Walking to Meetings

You have my sympathy, bosses seem to be completely detached from the real world when it comes to scheduling meetings outside of normal work hours, especially off site and I know from where I work trying to get expenses paid for using a taxi would be an uphill struggle.

Glad someone here gets it. Guess the others all have the perfect employers

Dont own a brolly and no one else there at the time of morning i get in to offer a lift, if they had they would oif lost there parking too which would not of been fair on them

Buy a brolly! Seriously, given the weather in this country there is a good chance you'll use it again.

It was what 2 miles? Can't be more then a fiver in a taxi.

"Hey mate, you driving to the meeting at X, I've got no way of getting there can I come with? I'll get you a pint after work to say thanks." kind of line.

So the generally gist of this is you all would have happily paid for your own taxi and not worried about the cost

No, if I wasn't able to drive and I had no money, I'm sure I could rustle up a quid from down the side of the sofa to buy an umbrella in poundland

Do you not all get hacked off with employers taking the wee

It's not your employer taking the ****, it's you, texting your boss a pathetic excuse like that was laughable.

What exactly were you expecting? For us all to hop on to your "OMG ILLEGAL SUE YOUR EMPLOYERS RAH" bus?

You walked 2 miles in the rain because you're a fool, not because they forced you to.

Didn't ask if i should sue just wanted opinion. Walked 2 miles cause i had no money, can not claim expenses, wore a coat still got soaked as i had no money for taxi couldnt buy an umbrella, no one in the office to give a lift to me

next month, save a pound from your wages to buy a brolly in case such a ludicrous situation should arise again.

Did you ask your employer if they could arrange transport? Did you ASK anyone at the office if they could give you a lift?

So far you've told us you did neither of those things, yet now you blame your employer, you're an adult for crying out loud, act like one. Not even going to touch on the "no money on the 10th of the month" part.

In an ideal world...

I was in a similiar situation recently which is why I'm sympathetic, my boss decided to schedule a 2 hour meeting at 8pm on a Saturday in an out of town location - it would have cost me £13 each way to get a taxi and the only person I know well enough to get a lift from lives the other side of town and would be going well out of their way.

Fortunatly managed to get a lift from my mum out there but still had to walk ~2 miles through the rain at 10pm to get home, half of which was unlit roads outside of town - in this case it was my choice as I can easily afford the taxi fare but decided against it - would have been a different case if I could have got it reimbursed at work.

EDIT: Oh and the real rub as with the OP most of the meeting had absolutely no relevance to my dept. but I still had to be there coz everyone else had to be.

Wait, this is a real thread?

Christ dude, there's something called common sense.

As others have said, it's only extracting the urine if you're required to make this "awful journey" on a regular basis when your usual place of work is somewhere else.

Surely a lift, taxi or bus (in that order for me) would have come first to mind rather than walking in the rain. Even then, borrow a brolly!

You know there's another thread on a another forum somewhere were a guy is laughing about how a college of his walked in the rain for half an hour to sit in his wet clothes of 6 hours...

I would have spoken to my boss and informed him how it was an inappropriate time and place to have a meeting.

Thats a little bit different though, middle of the night on a weekend well outside of normal working hours. Rather than in the middle of a normal working day.
In that case I would have expected reimbersment

cliffy, really mate. NOBODY cares. I'm not trying to be harsh, but it's the reality. NOBODY cared that I was dead tired this morning and struggled to stay awake the whole morning. NOBODY cares that I stayed 90min extra today without bothering to add it as overtime. NOBODY cares that I spent 3 hours on site today, 2 of them in hammering rain where I got drenched, definitely more so than you I bet.

Get a REAL issue, then come ask for advice. Don't expect to come here, post such laughable nonsense and expect a sympathetic ear.

Again.

Get an umbrella
Take a bus
Ask a mate
Walk
Quit your job.

Those are the options.
