Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Urgh. With the combination of prices creeping up for energy and my system boiler deciding it wants to start consuming gas like it's a billionaire, I'm not enjoying being cold at the moment.

I have the heating on twice a day. Once for 30 mins in a morning, when I get up for work and again at 4pm for a couple of hours, our gas usage has tripled. Last months bill was nuts £130 for us when we hover around £90 usually this time of year.

Throw in trying to get a plumber/heating engineer round to come and look is nigh on impossible. The ones local only want to do bathroom refurbs, not repairs at the moment.

Get a heat pump ;)

Edit in all seriousness, November was quite a bit colder than previous years, usually we don’t get the first cold snap until into December.

jesus £130 for a month... that stings. I know it's location dependent (am guessing you must live up North - real up north not a Londoners up north ;) )......but do you have a mansion or really poorly insulated house? I just checked for November and our gas (heating and shower) was under £55 for November (including SC)!

I'm considering a Heat Pump, but I think I'll need to replace the boiler sooner, rather than later and probably won't have the time to wait out for a HP install tbh.

Last years bills were with leaving the heating on until about 10pm. Now it's only on until 6pm.

I think it's the boiler. It's old and was put in with the house in 2005, so pushing 20 yr old and thus eating gas currently, which it never used to do.

Only up in East Yorkshire, cooler being nearer the coast, but not that Baltic :D

A modern weather compensating gas boiler and making sure you’re well insulated / radiators and pipework are properly sized will make all the difference. We keep our 4 bedroom Victorian house very warm on about £75 a month of gas when it’s very cold like that.

Yeah, it's the costs of energy and the old, aging, gas eating monster that's the cause. EPC rating is C, but can definitely be improved more, same for all homes.

Just a nightmare combination at the moment.

We had a gas boiler service yesterday. Paying £100 once a year may be overkill on a ten year old boiler but for peace of mind that it won't fall over during winter and is set optimally, it is probably worthwhile.

We get ours serviced every year and it's only 7 years old; always worth it, IMO. That said, ours doesn't change any of our settings, as that's something I keep on top of during the year. We tend to just get combustion chambers checked and cleaned, a few other general bits etc., all for £60.

we get our boiler serviced yearly (mental note.. phone plumber as it's due now). as it happens we have to anyway to keep it in warranty but I always did even with the old back boiler for piece of mind. I guess I got into the habit of it as 20 years back I rented out a room in my house to a lodger and if you are renting out things like service records are important.
I kept in the habit of doing it even when he moved out

My gas bill for November is £120.

First winter here; so still figuring out how best to heat the place. We have an old victorian style house. 3 rooms not in use really - so I keep radiators on low for them. Sometimes Turing off some radiators for a week or so. But I am not sure it helps much.

I'm expecting Decembers bill to easily be £150.

it does for me, i bought some smart radiator trvs, only heat the room im going to be in, makes a massive difference
also keep the boiler radiator tempurature turned down (load compensation?) takes longer to warm the room up but that makes a difference too

Yeah but our issue here is mainly infrastructure, we cant get the power to where its needed when its really windy so we pay them to turn off.. Its called curtailment.

Yup my understanding as well, it isn't because the turbines themselves will break.

I looked it up a while ago, because we are surrounded by wind turbines here and I often wondered why like out of 15 a couple would sometimes not be spinning.
