Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

where can i see the rates for tommorow already please?
Assuming you're on the tracker, get the Octotracker app (both iOS and Android), it has a widget on the iOS version and notification pushes for both iOS and Android so as soon as the rate for the next day is published, you get a notification.

we got our own wind turbines here in wales though....why we need scottish wind

From a quick Google:
  • Welsh Elec Production from Renewables - 7,582GWh (7.85TWh), 5,400GWh from Wind
  • Welsh Elec Usage (2023) - 18TWh

So less than half of your annual usage comes from renewables and only 5,400GWh of that is from wind - SOURCE (for 2022 is latest I can find)

Scotland, on the other hand (2023):
  • Scottish Elec Production from Renewables - 33,259GWh (33.2TWh), 25,816GWh from Wind
  • Scottish Elec Usage (2023) - 17.3TWh
  • "Scotland continues to generate more electricity than it needs with net exports of electricity to other UK nations in 2023 amounting to 15.9 TWh."
  • SOURCE (use links at bottom to move through report)

EDIT: In theory, Scotland effectively produces almost enough Electricity from renewables to run both Scotland and Wales  (yes, I know it's not as clear cut as that due to demand/supply peaks etc, hence "in theory")

So, where the rest of the UK has an electricity deficit, Scotland has a MASSIVE electricity surplus which is sent to the rest of the UK (and possibly other places). Scotland could produce more but Curtailment (switching off turbines due to over-production) happens as the UK grid isn't big enough to transmit the surplus to the rest of the UK at certain times so, not only do we pay to switch off the turbines, we also pay for other things like Gas to take up the deficit which would be covered by Wind if the grid was better.

look on the bright side...... 10 years ago the vast majority of our energy would have been reliant on fossil fuels. right now at least its only a handful of days where things get silly.

Whats happening tomorrow such that prices are absolutely nuts for 12+ hours straight?
From what i gather, EDF has decided to shut down half the nuclear reactors in the UK for refuelling and it won't really be back up to full speed until the weekend. Fortunately, when the storm was blowing the weekend just gone, the wind turbines were working overtime and electricity dipped pretty low, so we decided to do every bit of laundry in the house and all we had to do to ride out not using the washing machine, the air fryer or oven (which is eclectic) for the next couple of days. Which is completely doable, thank god our heating and cooker uses Gas which is still the same price as always.

Loving the outrage that tracker goes up as well as down :D
Not seeing any outrage here, we have the last laugh as we've been below the red line for over a year and saved hundreds, spending an extra couple of pounds over the next few days isn't a bug deal.

Ooof, Agile is 40p+ from 07:30 tomorrow, hitting 91p in the peak! one of a few days making me thankful I switched back to good old Octopus GO.

93.72p peak here, with an average price of around 45p per kWh

Likewise, increasingly glad I jumped to Go a month ago. If we were still on Agile I think we'd be off out for dinner tonight :p

Our average daily cost in December so far is £2.84. Intelligent octopus go with ev, solar, battery and ashp. Our November bill said our average unit cost was 9.6p so pretty happy with it.

Thanks for this. I've been loading up the website in a mobile browser each day. I incorrectly thought if they had this functionality it would be in the octopus main app!
