I guess not his best, but The Thing does have a haunting soundtrack.

Totally off topic but I'm starting to really appreciate scores in films probably even more so than compared to the "official sound track".
E.g. Transformers, Stardust etc., are two examples I can think of where the score was better than the other main tracks in the film.
