This is not a rumor, this is a confirmation: Dirk Meyer, CEO of AMD, was quoted in AMD's recent financial conference as saying the following:

"We are ramping the ATI Radeon HD 5000 series now and look forward to refreshing the entire lineup in the second half of next year."

When he says the "second half of next year," he is referring to the second half of AMD's fiscal year, which would be July through December 2010. Now, the question is what exactly does refresh mean? Will AMD simply release enhanced versions of the current Radeon HD 5000 series (most likely in the form of clockspeed bumps), or will this be the entirely new next-generation architecture known as the "Northern Islands?"

Refresh on 5000 series, new gen isn't coming this year... slim chance they might have it out for Christmas.

So your looking at 20-30% performance increases.

EDIT: Tho apparently the move below 40nm is well ahead of plan on the materials side so it might bring it forward a few months.

I think we're beginning to see, and will continue to see AMD / ATI looking at NV's strategy more carefully,

NV are clearly looking to HPC as a way to push their products, and they have a MASSIVE lead over ATI on this. So AMD will try and respond, maybe a few more videos with a fat geek talking about OpenCL?
