Question now is it worth us 5600X owners switching or sticking?
Ofcourse not, GPU is the most important thing, better save money for stronger GPU, it will give you much bigger boost than cpu. With current situation in gpu segment every dollar more in pocket is good. Anyone who is considering to change cpu wait for Zen 4, it will give huge boost, but still GPU will give more.

so we're back to the same point again. It doesn't matter that the CPU is impressive in performance and price, it's completely negated by the stupid money you have to shell out for the platform as a whole.

Value king my arse.

More realistic power consumption numbers here. Around 117 watts for 6 core Alder Lake, quad core max power usage is around 89 watts. Link:

Does seem like Intel is still understating the power usage, based on this:

The 12100 / 12100f might've been a good stop cap CPU, until Raptor Lake, but it's priced at £120-£150 at the moment. Hopefully they will bring the prices down...

Looking at the locked 12900 and 12900F, the prices seem really high (>£500), with poor availability in the UK right now...

£115 motherboard - https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-B660M-G-DDR4

Equivalent B550 is half the price, from the same manufacturer, is this becoming the GPU market where the manufacturers are just scalping the public now? £60 gets you 16GB of RAM and if you are doing a budget build that is a huge amount of said budget.

Heck if a board costs the same as the CPU, in the case of a 12100F, then we've hit a new low in what is classed as budget. It's gonna cost £240 for a quad core plus a basic board, for £40 more you can buy a 5600X with a B550. I thought AMD were out of the budget race, but I guess the market says otherwise.

>£500 seems too high for a 12900/12900f... I wonder what Intel is playing at? I suppose the same old story, i9s always priced too high, locked or unlocked.

The official retail price for the 12900F is $464.00 - $494.00, or as low as £342-£364 + VAT. So the UK price should be closer to £400.

That's probably per 1,000 price so individual units will cost more, and for years GBP price has always been just a 1:1 swap from USD. So even removing stock levels from the equation, UK price would be about £500.

We've seen this a lot with Intel boards since Comet Lake. For whatever reason, Intel boards are just silly money across the board. Even the supposed budget chipsets have been north of £100 and even then have been comparatively junk next to same-tier AM4 boards and previous-gen Intel boards.

From the news thats coming out it looks like it would be better to wait for Raptor lake.
