Err, Halo 2 (spoilers)

There are some links that quickly sum up the storyline for people that want to jump straight in at H3.

I'd consider playing Halo 2 though as there are a number of functions introduced in Halo 2 that are expanded massively in H3 which could be a bit too much all at one time to take in. I know it was for me, and I played Halo 2 a lot :p
 
Borrow it or buy it from a bargain bin. A quick run through on Easy shouldnt take more than a day. If you care about the single player its not recommended to jump straight into Halo 3 without playing Halo 2, since you wont understand what the hell is going on.

Yeah but Halo 2 is completely superceded by Halo 3. It has nothing to offer that isn't in Halo 3. Perhaps the first does (had some pretty good levels), but I wouldn't say the second has anything over the 3rd.

Final Fantasy VII! Orcarina of Time! Goldeneye! Half Life! Although I'd say that classics are being made all the time, the mid-late nineties had a barrage of phenomenal games.

Funny that, since yesterday when my legendary edition arrived...ive been playing the SP mode on Halo3 and i didnt even bother looking at or playing halo2. Tbh your right though, its kinda hard to understand whats going on but then with John Woo Stranglehold...i dont really pay much attention to the storyline.

But i gather the lizard looking fella used to be an enemy of Master Chief right?? and now hes on the same side as the good guys.

Hmmm as i said i dont really understand the storyline of Halo...all i know is that Master Chief is having a war with the bad dudes..whatever their names are:p and they are hell bent on destroying earth i guess....am i right or wrong??
 
I suppose a brief summary would be:

Halo is a weapon designed to destroy the Flood parasite, but the Covenant believe firing the weapon will send them on their 'great journey'. Once the flood problem grows it forms a Gravemind (think Little Shop of Horrors) this will do anything to prevent the rings being fired to destroy them.

The Arbiter was a disgraced commander of the covenant, his race is known as the Elites. He is made into the Arbiter, an ancient soldier who in times of crisis will sacrafice himself but save the Covenant. However, he discovers what Halo is really for and that the prophets have lied. The Elites then leave the Covenant and ally with the humans.
