eSATA Please explain

ESATA is basically a external SATA connector for hard drives, the connector is slightly different, I believe this was to make it stronger.

Overclockers have two on pre-order: Clicky

But most are hd drives caddies, I use 2 of the blue Askasa for backups on my pc's via esata.

Better off waiting for usb 3.0 pen drives to arrive, 5gbps anyone. :D

Trouble with esata least in my experience you need to have it plugged in and switched on when in post for the controller to pick it up otherwise windows would see bugger all, not my idea of hot swappable.

You need to turn on ahci mode in the bios. Be prepared for windows to bluescreen on boot if you don't warn it that you're going to do this.

eSATA appears to be electrically identical to sata. I think this is a shame, as I'd like e-sata to carry power. Making them more robust sounds sensible, I think the cables are shielded too. I don't really see the point, normal sata cables seem to work just fine outside the case for me.

OS for AHCI
Vista or 7 = epic win (no more BSOD!)
XP or and older = fail (unless you install the ahci driver during install or you can update drivers search google)

eSATA is basicly SATA with a better shielded cable and diffrent connector, you can find eSATA brackets that will just passtru to internal SATA :)

good luck ;)

Thought it might be something silly, with regards to warning windows im running in achi mode how do i go about doing this?

From what i can gather the next esata upgrade will be powered, thank god i hate using those bulky adaptors, still by the time that comes out everyone will be using usb 3.0 anyway, making it fairly redundant.

Well seems newer boards now do support powered esata, bonus!!

From what i can see the gigabyte ud7 i've ordered has both it's sata ports powered, one being sata 3.0 and the other sata 6.0, excellent ok it does mean a cable for now but finally no more frigging adaptors, i'll just have to wait to an enclosure to support powered esata.
