Before I ask, this is not a flaming thread, I’m just curious if this is true.

So this morning I’m watching this showed call "Christmas Cooks" on ITV. They have Keith Floyd on there cooking some meal. While cooking he is chatting to the presenter Antony Thompson.

Keith Floyd is telling Antony a story about how he ended up in hospital. While he was there a nurse told him (a rough remembrance by me of what he said on the show) "I know you’re a chef so you will hate the food, If only you were part of an ethnic minority, such as Muslim. Then you would get all your food fresh, due to Halal". The conversation was then instantly moved onto another subject by Antony.

So does anyone know if what Keith Floyd said was true (well what the nurse told him?)

Hmm unlikely, all the fried chicken shops round our way proclaim to be Halal, and the food there certainly isn't fresh (albeit pretty damn tasty, especially at 3am) :D

It might be something as simple as they use a different supplier for Halal food to the normal stuff, where the former is of better quality?

I think Halal is something to do with the way the animal is killed, nothing to do with freshness (or even quality). Don't quote me on that though.

It isn't a problem as long as everyone else who demands it fresh gets it.

Indeed. I'm sure that if it was perceived that through whatever system whites were more likely to get fresh food then it wouldn't be 'okay' to many sections of society.

Oh, and Muslims aren't a race.

In our local hospital i know it is the reverse of this the halal meals are bought in and the rest are made fresh.
And i would guess this is true of the way most hospitals who make their own food works.

Are you referring to North Manchester General (Crumpsall)?

I belive (was told so might not be wholey true) the beast has to be strung from its feet and have its throat cut, draining all the blood and life from it, also contravining eu animal cruelty policys.... but thats ok.....

Slitting its throat is believed to be less painful than electrocution or shooting. Or is my biology off today? (I do happen to like Halal meat by the way, much better than supermarket meat, but I don't eat it for religious reasons)

Exactly.

So that's what he means by 'fresh'.

What if it were a white muslim?

;)

I saw this, its outrageous. Why don't I get fresh food? Why do they get fresh food. Next time i'm in hospital, i'll tell them that i'm a jedi (he he) and that my religion only permits me to eat extremely rare serloin steak, chips and peas.

I don't even remember there being a halal option on the menu here, so I assumed they were made to order, or maybe there is no option.

I would assume it's the former due to the large asian communities we service, and after all we are home to the Inter-faith gown (which is actually rather disconcerting) :p

I would expect this could be true due to suppliers, but this could happen the other way around I am sure. As people who have a halal diet need food to be killed in a specific way, they will have food that comes from a company which is certified as halal, and this company may supply food in greater frequency, and less volume than other companies.

This would be my guess anyway.

Halal isn't illegal. They were going to make it illegal at the EU level, but the law was changed to allow Halal killings. It's not cruel, and there's some evidence that it's a better way of killing than electrocution (which occasionally leaves chickens alive as they go into the plucking machine - lovely) or bolt guns, which are likewise not flawless.

I've heard it said that claiming to be Jewish or Muslim is a good way to get better quality food, as it has to be prepared separately and is usually from a better supplier. It's similar to what a girl I knew at uni did by claiming to be vegan, thus getting better food. Sure, it's all vegan stuff, but it's better quality than the meaty rubbish the rest of us got. Still couldn't live without my meat though...

PS LOL MUSLIMS.
