Ever fancy a change but hold back?

Don't buy an S-Body to drift (or as a road car) unless you like these things:

1) being poor
2) oil, spanners, and laying on the floor covered in both
3) being poor
4) rust
5) turbo gaskets

I am on my second Silvia, its bloody good fun though! Had an S14a, now an Oldschool S12.

Shameless Pimping..

my mate has an s15 as a daily, if you have any questions ill pass them onto him. (ps the one in the pic isnt his :P)

biggest hate is "nice skylines" when were out together in the 14a and 15. *cringe*

It'd be nice to get an S13/S14 as opposed to an MX-5 as a second car, but I imagine they'll all be facing issues of mass rust now?

The MX-5 suffers in fairly easy to get places, where as I think the S13/14's are generally all over aren't they?

s14-15 common places of rust are sills and wheel arches. my s14a is rustfree and underneath is very clean for a 15year old car.

my friends 15 is starting to get slight bubbles on his arches and also needed to replace his subframe as it was rotting.

if you look at them, take a torch and have a very good look underneath.

I doubt very much that you will regret selling the 182 if you are replacing it with an s15 :)

How much time are you expecting to spend on a track? Mx5 is a great choice and tbh if it breaks its no big deal, superchargers and turbo’s are affordable for a track mx5 so you could go down that route too. If you are starting out I would defiantly recommend going down the tramp-drift route as you are likely to break or damage something fairly quickly plus it will give you a lot more confidence in something you don’t mind smashing to bits.

The thing is whilst the 15 is undoubtedly a better/nicer/faster/cooler/whatever car.

It just can't offer the one thing you get when you get in a 172/182, which is the fun factor, i used to own a phase 1 172 and the guy i bought it off said every time he drove it it just made him laugh and once I drove it a bit I knew exactly what he meant.

It was rattly, and whilst it wasn't exactly slow it wasn't fast either, it was not in any way refined, the controls had those annoying renault quirks of not being like all the other cars (ie windscreen washers on a different switch), but when you jumped in and drove it none of that mattered I wrote mine off 3 months after buying it but I will never forget the experience I had, if my needs didn't require a different car I would probably go and get another one. In fact should funds allow it some time in the future I may buy one as a toy/weekend car/track toy (although track toy unlikely seeing as I have never been on a track day :p )

I say go for a test drive in the S15/S14/S14a and see what you make of it, if it drive how you imagine it will drive and does what you imagine it will do then go for it. I understand your decision and why it is tough though. :)

Seriously??? :/

dare i say even the mx5 is a more enjoyable car to drive than the clio. i cant personally speak for an s15 but an s14 has a lot more to offer in terms of driving experience than the clio would.

I'd recommend you do a drift experience/tuition day before you decide whether to sell your clio. There aren't many opportunities to learn on the road and imo you'd be stupid to do so anyway. Get out of your head that you will be drifting round every roundabout and corner, it just doesn't happen.

http://www.driftlimits.co.uk/ are pretty good and they use mx5s so that will help you decide if you want one of those too.

Personally, I'd recommend an older BMW 3 series rather than an mx5. I've heard the engines aren't the strongest in the s14-15 (edit - all lies apparently :p)? Don't know if anyone has any experience with that.

the sr20 is one of the strongest engines going.

just needs 6000mile oil changes and keep an eye out for vvt rattle. other then that solid.

these engines came stock at 200bhp and can run 350 on standard internals, thats pretty awesome in my fanboy eyes.

I already know that won't be the case, it would just be the awesomeness of driving around in an S15, I know I wouldn't be drifting round all the corners lol.

I've already got plans to do a day (and go from there) at driftlimits, hoping to go next month if there's any spots left :)

As far as I've heard the S14-15 engines are an extremely strong engine!

Exactly, and 300bhp can be done on fairly cheap mods too!

honestly in exactly the came postion as youself. I have an e46 320d bm but I have taken a real real wild notion of getting myself a ford capri.
i travel 65 miles return to work each day so the 2.8i that im looking for wouldnt compare to the 55+ mpg im getting atm. And as you have said I cant afford to insure/tax/mot both at the same time.(my insurance is £1560 with 3 years no claims driving and no points , dicks)
my plan is keep driving away at what I have, but I have tightened my belt, saving like mad and even if I have to wait for what im guessing will be 2 years :-( il be happy in the end!

it will only really be something that I drive every other weekend, somthing real mint that I will no doubt sopend more time polishing and waxing than driving..untill then im happy sitting on google images and you tube imagining what will be!

P.S this is my first post, joined today:-)

If you want to learn to drift then buy a beat old e36, fit JOMs, weld the diff, fit a hyrdo then hit your local practice day as often as you can. MX5 is not an easy car to drift, you need to be good to do it properly.
If you want to pose, buy an S15 ;) Having said that, an S-chassis Nissan is the easiest thing to drift in the world and when driving one you will quickly find yourself drifting everywhere. If you are a noob then you will smash it though, and then you will be upset.

Have you ever drifted before?

My old e36 328i auto was superb @drifting (with none of Clarkeys mods!) - I would opt for one of these as they can be had for a lot less than an S15 so if the (almost) inevitable bang (be it in terms of crash or parts lunching themselves) happens, its not fiscal disaster.....

Although truck drifting is FAR more fun.... :D
Buy a Scania R420......
