Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone's modded the above card please?

I'm on about 2 things really

a) It is now the loudest thing in my rig and am keen to get it quieter

b) Unlocking pipelines and shaders, and if there is a risk involved in this?!

Please post your success/failure stories!

I don't have personal experience, but aren't the ASUS cards the one with the molex that goes perpendicular to the card? If so, you won't be able to fit an Artic Cooler without some modification/soldering.

A Zalman cooler would be a good idea to lower the noise, or you may be able to use the supplied software to control the existing fan.

There's a very very very slim risk in unlocking the pipes/shaders (I think I've read maybe one or two b0rked cards that wouldn't go back to normal after unlocking/relocking out of hundreds); the main killer is if you run a lot of voltage through them to acheive higher overclocks etc.

Phil99, cheers for that. Yes the Molex does connect perpendicularly :( Maybe the best thing would be to look at some software, like you say then to see if I can lower the fan speed, that'd be the best change for not affecting warranty!

With regard to the pipes/shaders, I spoke to Asus who said that my warranty won't stand unless I get it back to "factory standard" in which case he said i'd be fine for any returns. As I don't know what I'm doing with it, I wonder if i'm best leaving it  not sure....

Yeah phil you're right.

Anyway stokefan - i have one which is fully unlocked and o/c as per my sig. Great card. noise not too bad and the temps seem to max out about 55C. I've fitted a zalman as the artic doesn't fit unles you move the molex.

Not too much risk in unlocking the pipes if you do use rivatuner, ATItool Beta10 is good for finding max core/mem

As for warranty, if you use rivatuner to mod the clocks these are set by software on bootup so asus won't know they've been soft unlocked/overclocked

u rang asus? silly fool never tell them your modding there card ! :p hehe :D

yes, but didnt' tell them my name or serial numbers etc....so I'm fine really aren't i?

I actually spoke to the notebook support dept, but even that guy seemed pretty unperturbed with the fact I will be trying to unlock pipes etc.

I didn't know that about the mods only being present when the software runs...I thought it was physical changes you're making to the card, so it will be permanently changed! I don't know much about RivaTuner or unlocking etc.

That is a fair overclock you have there mate, most people near me in the ORB only increase by like 50Mhz each way, I have just under 9000 3d Mark 03s btw.

Did you have to increase any voltage to get those overclocks? or did you just use software to mod?

I had the V9999GE and it would'nt unlock the extra pipes or shader without really bad artifacting. That was using Rivatuner too. Mine had 2 x molex that had to be plugged in.

No voltmods at all - thought about and there was a long thread on it in this forum a few months back and the conclusion was that if you can get 400ish any way its not really worth it as you could bork the card on flashing, the temps will increase and could very well shorten the life span of the card.

for voltmod on the mem you need to add another VR and it could all go horribly wrong

Cool - I wouldn't bother with a voltmod myself, i'm really surprised at how well you've overclocked on air though, I would have thought the lifespan of the card will be reduced by increasing GPU and mem Mhz alone though!?

I have the asus 6800NU, I had no idea how to unlock a card before buying it, seemingly there are two ways to mask pipelines, I had hardware masked ones (which supposedly measn that they were shown as defective when tested) and it did give me artifacts.

I got another vertex shader though, havent tried overclocking it yet
ASUS software that comes with the card does allow you to control the fan speed

could you correct the pipelines back to stock ones only then once you discovered you got artifacts then Ric?

Yes you can lock the pipe lines back up -its just a case of selecting a 'tick box' in rivatuner, reboot and job done.

The asus software (smartdocotor) is a bit naff really, speedfan might be abetter idea, its what I use.

Just wanted to ask guys if any of you were thinking about upgrading and selling your old Asus 6800 V9999's could you please let me know. I know they can be had for a little over £100 elsewhere but I was hoping to pick one up a little cheaper for a secondary system I use. Thanks.

yes, all I had done was unlocked, opened 3dmark2003 and on the first load screen i was having problems, closed it down and relocked them

and yes as with most asus utilities of late, it is a bit rubbish but I was just suggesting how easy it is to lower the fan speed (i.e. they pretty much do it for you if you can't be bothered with other utilities)

damn it, just soft mod the card, no damage can occur unless you increase the voltage to the chip. softmodding is safe and reliable and you can easily revert back by just loading up into safe mode and uninstalling riva tuner.

So easy, load rivatuner n follow a guide of google. I'm so happy my 80 quid card can run fear on half decent settings.

I got 16 Pipelines
6 shaders
with
core = 412
Memory = 939

i managed to unlock only 1 vertex shader as my other 4 pipelines made artifacts. does the zalman cooler fit nicely on these cards, and what temps do you get with the zalman?

thanks

daven

i also have to add that im very happy with my gfx card, its a cracking deal for the money and the unlocking is the icing on the cake.

for the price the 6800nu is deffo the best value for money card on currently on agp.
the asus v9999 in particular is a top deal.
