I have! I got home just under an hour ago along with my parents having spent last night snowed in at Morrisons in High Wycombe due to a sudden unexpected snowfall that hit the Chilterns yesterday evening.
We were ready to leave at 4:30pm yesterday and instead got home at 9:30am this morning. We made two attempts at getting home inbetween those times and got precisely nowhere. Instead we camped out in Morrisons cafe along with about 20 others and I have to say the staff (some of which were night staff and some were management who stayed on to look after us) were brilliant, we had free tea and coffee all night, they made us sausages and chips at 3am plus toast with jam this morning and threw in some toothbrushes as well. It really is the little things that make all the difference. They also made sure everyone was warm with coats and duvets (god knows where they came from) and we all sat out the bad weather. We amused ourselves with newspapers, crossword puzzles and random conversation.
Eventually we gave in this morning and had another go at getting home, for those who know the area, Amersham and Marlow Hill were both closed and Cryers Hill was not gritted. Basically any hills were no-go areas. Dad managed to burn the clutch out on his Mondeo scrabbling for grip up Cryers. The town was littered with abandoned vehicles, some just dumped, some had slid into other cars but the whole place was eerie. I have never seen anything like it.
The one thing that has impressed me through this experience is peoples sense of community spirit, I got myself involved by helping push cars up hills and helping some guy rock his Bora out of a ditch but random people helped us dig out our car when we got stuck back in our village. It's great to know that people are willing to help others out.
So....a huge thank you to Morrisons HW for keeping us warm and fed. Unfortunately Thames Valley Police and Wycombe Council were no use whatsoever with no communication and have you people never heard of grit lorries??
Did anyone else get snowed in anywhere?
