I have! I got home just under an hour ago along with my parents having spent last night snowed in at Morrisons in High Wycombe due to a sudden unexpected snowfall that hit the Chilterns yesterday evening.

We were ready to leave at 4:30pm yesterday and instead got home at 9:30am this morning. We made two attempts at getting home inbetween those times and got precisely nowhere. Instead we camped out in Morrisons cafe along with about 20 others and I have to say the staff (some of which were night staff and some were management who stayed on to look after us) were brilliant, we had free tea and coffee all night, they made us sausages and chips at 3am plus toast with jam this morning and threw in some toothbrushes as well. It really is the little things that make all the difference. They also made sure everyone was warm with coats and duvets (god knows where they came from) and we all sat out the bad weather. We amused ourselves with newspapers, crossword puzzles and random conversation.

Eventually we gave in this morning and had another go at getting home, for those who know the area, Amersham and Marlow Hill were both closed and Cryers Hill was not gritted. Basically any hills were no-go areas. Dad managed to burn the clutch out on his Mondeo scrabbling for grip up Cryers. The town was littered with abandoned vehicles, some just dumped, some had slid into other cars but the whole place was eerie. I have never seen anything like it.

The one thing that has impressed me through this experience is peoples sense of community spirit, I got myself involved by helping push cars up hills and helping some guy rock his Bora out of a ditch but random people helped us dig out our car when we got stuck back in our village. It's great to know that people are willing to help others out.

So....a huge thank you to Morrisons HW for keeping us warm and fed. Unfortunately Thames Valley Police and Wycombe Council were no use whatsoever with no communication and have you people never heard of grit lorries??

Did anyone else get snowed in anywhere?

Never been snowed in anywhere but been 'grounded' because of the fog at Heathrow once which was really boring and also stuck in Gatwick because of the weather and trains had stopped.

Would have been better in a department store :) Or did they let you watch the DVDs? (assuming they had any)

I moved out of High Wycombe just over 2 months ago, having lived there all my life, up to Manchester. My mum still lives in Widmer End (at the top of Cryers Hill basically) and she didn't even bother trying to go anywhere.

A mate of mine spent several hours on the Marlow bypass trying to get home, and I counted about 5 people on facebook who said that they abandoned their cars and walked home - nightmare!

Nice to hear that Morrisons looked after you.

Awesome, was just looking through the live feed after I Googled HW - seems a lot of poeple were stuck in John Lewis as well. What a shopping trip :D

edit
Apparently people snowed in John Lewis High Wycombe last night were allowed to sleep on the beds in the bed department :)

Always wanted to do this as a kid! :D

It wasn't even snowing when we set out. Crazy how it came on and got so bad so quickly. My facebook is also full of people whose status says they have left their car somewhere.

I wish they had let us watch the dvds, they didn't have any playing cards of games or anything so I had to get one of those puzzle books. It was better than sitting around twiddling your thumbs. It was amazing how the slightest thing became a big event though, their bread delivery somehow managed to get through at about 6am and everyone was so excited over it. :D John Lewis would have been brilliant! Apparently Loudwater Tesco had people in, so did two churches and the hospital and also Sainsburys although they were forced to evacuate in the early hours of the morning as their fire alarm went off.

Nightmare of a night, not something I want to go through again.

We were only 5 miles from my parents home in Prestwood (I'm from Crawley), some people had much further to go such as Wendover and I felt really bad for them especially those who had young kids. I wonder how many of those we originally started out with at Morrisons chanced it and were then forced to spend the night in the car.

I feel like a small piece of me dies each time I enter a supermarket so I feel for you spending the whole night in one.

No, but 6 years ago I went out on Xmas Eve for drinks with friends, clubs etc, and woke up at 7am on top of the trolleys outside Safeway.

I've never seen the Mist, what is the storyline?

I read the book (one of very few books ive read) Not as good as some of steven kings other books but it was ok. Some mist rolled in and everyone got trapped in a supermarket, then there was some sort of big monster in a store room.

Was pretty turd actually!

Only whilst working..

Sounds like they actually treated you very well. Fair play to them, can't get much better customer service than that.
Although if I was within walking distance I would walk home rather than being stuck anywhere.
