Ever walked out of a job?

When I was 17 I had a job working for a furniture company where the boss has been on TV an won the UK's worst boss award. Everyone was amazed I lasted more that a month because most people quit after a week, with 1 guy climbing out of the bathroom window after just 4 hours.

Anyway, I was sanding the varnish down on a wardrobe when some lazy idiot that no one liked came up to me and said completely out of the blue "I hear your missus takes it up the ass!"

I lost it and put him through the back of a wardrobe and walked out. Didn't wait for disciplinary or anything, just left. Turns out the boss actually sacked him for it as the bosses son overheard everything and I wouldn't of been fired for it.

Terrible job though.

At 18, I left a company called EDS after a year. Just left because of I was bored. I had spent 6 months working there, followed by 6 months sitting around with nothing to do. They refused to move me as my team consisted of me, a pregnant woman and a man about to retire. It meant I couldn't complete my NVQ. Handed my notice in, worked it and left.

The inland revenue boss that did my exit interview said he wished he could have the balls to walk out to nothing, then when I said I just wanted a job with a pile of work I could work though offered me a job in his team. Shame my contract wouldn't allow it for 6 months after leaving. :(

Walked out of a job in January 2008. For one, there was more work being piled on me than I could manage, with one colleague being off on long term sick after her partner crashed the motorbike on which they were both riding. Her temporary replacement brought in from another job onsite had held the role previously, but had been moved out of it for getting too chatty with the clients. She'd literally spend 20-30 mins on the phone making idle chit-chat with most of them, while all her calls were forwarded on to others who shouldn't be handling them for her (primarily me I might add). Thus she fell into old habits, and the pressure on me mounted and mounted, and mounted. I spoke to management repeatedly, I pointed out the fact that the previous incumbent in this role had also walked due to the pressure, but they wouldn't listen.

The final straw came when the supervisor, who had periodically helped out went on a holiday during our busiest period that had been booked and known to management for over a year. They'd done NOTHING to put additional support in place, so by the Tuesday I'd had enough. I simply slammed my phone down after the 5th angry customer of the day raging over waiting times to get through, and walked out. I went back the next day, handed them a letter of immediate resignation and my keys back, and told them in no uncertain terms what I thought of how they treated their staff.

Yep. Once. Dipped my pen in the office ink, if you know what I mean... led to weeks of major hassle when it all went ****-up (as it almost always does). Had to get out of there even though the pay was.. actually the pay was terrible too. And the company totally changed their work ethic and attitudes. I'd also been encouraged to try to make partner there for a year or so, but when I started showing signs I was ready for it they knocked me right back, made me feel like a rookie again.

Yeh, wasn't good. Got out of there pretty sharpish and never looked back!

Remember one of the managers at the bar I worked in lost his rag on the night and took it out on us, both me and the girl walked out but he apologised in a couple of days so were back working there on the weekend.

I used to work at morrisons, frozen food dep.

Boss asked me to sweep out the main freezer so put my thin jacket on and gloves and started.

Some moron decided that it would be funny to close the door on me, but the emergency open button was frozen over with like a foot of ice so I couldn't open the door.
Was stuck in there at -22c for over an hour.
My boss came to find me and let me out, I told him I quit and left.
I had gone blue and was ill for about 2 weeks.

You could have been killed, I am surprised you just left, you should have sued them or something.

A couple of times, Firstly working for a bar my girlfriend at the time was ill and i told him i wouldn't be coming in as i had to look after her, i left hers at 3 in the morning and walked home, he was driving home saw me and accused me of being on the lash, told him to shove his job and never came back.

Secondly working for a call centre, hated the job but it was ok money i guess. I got hit by a car and broke 3 ribs, called and told them and after a moment the boss said so ill see you in a few days? i said "ive been hit by a bloody car, i cant walk and can hardly breath...." he told me that was no excuse, so i told him to **** his job and never went back.

Nearly walked out of my last job, Retail work think topman then think of the other mens store they are linked to, the manager wasnt trained as a manager and was thick as pig ****, I carried the store for a year before I was so tired i could hardly get out of bed in the morning, when I went above her to the area manager after countless attempts to speak to her about it (she would just cry and run off) I was told I should give her my support, I found out the previous manager and her had stolen a couple hundred pounds from the safe for staff parties that never happened, when going through the safe log and took that to the area manager, I was interviewed as they thought I had stolen itand reported it to cover my own back. I handed in my notice and was told I had to work a month, I said I will be gone at the end of the week. I later got paid a handsome bonus from them for smashing targets. when I went back to see some friends apparently I was bad mouthed throughout the little "managers circle" but all the staff for the area thought i was some sort of legend for doing what i did, i know what i did was right and im quite happy that i reported theft and worked hard, but the attitude towords staff was god awful.

PS i would never walk out of a job that would stop me having a career always hand notice in and work up till the end.

Yeah I have to say thats pretty extreme Phoenixdancer surely you were able to claim some severe damages for this?!?

Seems most people who walked out did so at a younger age than me currently and in not such a tough environment.

If I can find something else then I won't bother turning up again just tell them that day/evening I won't be back in the morning.

Only time i walked out was a family business, my Uncle and Aunts real estate agency.

Was employed as an accountant at 17, job was mainly data entry and making sure everything balanced out.

Before a year was up, not only was i doing that job.. i was

1. Babysitting their brat kids at the office

2. Being sent to the shops etc.. every lunch time, not to get my own food, and it still counted as 'my time'

3. Hoovering and cleaning the kitchen (which i never used, always eat at night mainly)

4. Working 1-2hours overtime daily without over time pay, they were workaholics, i'm not.

5. Getting told off daily for minor things like leaving a bathroom light on ffs, in front of staff and customers.

6. Got told i was getting a pay cut due to business being slower than usual, and generally treated as an inferior kid, business was not slower, i entered the accounting information FFS, they thought i was THAT dumb.

7. Getting reminded daily that they were only doing my mum a favour and that i wasn't really needed. (lie, cause when i left they hired someone a week later lol)

8. Pay was 600 a month! (even in 98 that was out of order lol) Hours were 8:20 to 5:30!!

Last straw was when my older cousin bought some PC stuff and got it delivered to the office. One cpu was missing from the order and they knew i was into computers.. so decided to interogate me and accuse me of theft. All i came to work in was my suit/without jacket.. only a coat. Didn't have a car at the time. I got so peed off i threw me coat at them and ripped my trouser pockets off (cheap crap) and was about to take it off before they said they believed me.. :D I told all to f off, and in the heat of the moment kicked a 19" monitor off the desk, went home via bus to find out i prolly left my housekey at work :o Waited for parents to come in, explained the situation and they told me not to bother going back, way out of order and they knew i was not happy there.. They haven't spoken since either. Heard the company admitted fault and forgot to pack the cpu.

Yep. I quit after 4 days of being a bus driver. Put off by all the horror stories told to me by the other drivers. I fully understand why there is more or less 100% union membership in that line of work. Sheep get treated better.

I almost did at my previous job, but partly my own fault.

New job and on the first couple of days I was about 15-20mins late.. I know, I know, that's terrible and all.... but by sheer coincidence there were major accidents on the dual carridgeway to work on those days and therefore I couldn't take an alternate route.

Boss took me into the meeting room and did the whole "I can get rid of you *clicks fingers* like that!". Was tempted then just to walk out. I'll take responsibility for me being late, but my boss's choice of words could have been better...

My boss was the kind of person whom, if having a bad day, would lump it on other people. The ironic thing is, two days after I was late my boss called mentioning his late arrival late due to "traffic issues". I also noticed during my brief time there pretty much everyone in the office (25 or so) had been late at some point with no consequence.

When we had traffic issues with the snow my boss's response was always "Well leave earlier then".

Safe to say, I'm far happier in my new job.

I walked out of a job after near 13 years a long time back.
Best move I have ever made is being my own boss. No more jobs worths, no more job titles and no more stress. Better for my tax, better for my life style and better for it:D

I once had a bus driver tell me he couldn't accept any notes larger than a fiver because the Union said so.

Pathetic.
