Chipset and Bus Details

The EVGA SR-X uses the Intel® C606 chipset. This chipset has native SATA 6G and SAS.

Only Xeon® E5 Class Socket 2011 CPUs are compatible. It IS NOT compatible with Core i5/Core i7 CPUs. Please visit our CPU Support Page for details.

The EVGA SR-X motherboard supports PCI-E 3.0 performance via a PLX PCI-E 3.0 certified bridge chip. This allows the SR-X to populate all PCI-E 3.0 slots at the maximum bandwidth possible. The PCI-E lane configuration is as follows:

1 Card: x16
2 Cards: x16 - x16
3 Cards: x16 - x16 - x16
4 Cards: x16 - x16 - x8 - x8

This is the only board that would ever tempt me away from a Mac Pro.

I assume over clocking by the bclk multiplier is the only way here?

Edit: Nope. No BLCK straps and E5 Xeons are locked.

The whole thing seems a little pointless now :/

There must be (i hope) some unlocked 2011 Xeons coming soon, just a matter of time.

If you were Intel, why would you bother?

Xeons are for servers and workstations where stability is paramount. The amount of people who would buy SR-X type machines are very, very few in number.

Hence, I don't see it happening.

The best I recon will happen is BCLK multipliers.

Bit of a shame really but hey-ho.

Maybe some Extreme versions are based on Xeon? I don't know. There has been a load of unlocked Xeons in the past, so why not in the future?

Asus will also be bringing out their own Dual Socket 2011 board shortly. And unlike EVGA you shouldnt have any issues with getting hold of them..

the whole Xeon thing is the only thing concerning me

the overclockable nature of the last gen of westmere xeons was superb

my X5680 did 5GHz with ease in my X58UD7 board. but it does seem a little pointless.

that said, the features of the board do make up for it a little.

without clocking, i cant see it being much faster than an SR-2
