I have two 780ti Kingpins and they've been excellent since I bought them in 2014, powering my dual monitor setup and the hdmi port connected to my TV. However since the end of last year, they've been acting weird.
The problems just come and go. It ranges from coil whine during gaming, sometimes a blank screen when I start a game on the primary monitor (not the TV) and the only way to get rid of the blank screen is either a hard reset or take out the two DVI cables at the back then plug the primary monitor to the none primary DVI port and then it resets itself and the screen shows again. Sometimes games that I can play at about 80fps on 2560x1440 resolution could barely do 30fps after a restart. The more pronounced problem is if I'm playing a game and the game crashes, if I restart the game, one of the cards downclocks and doesn't go past 800mhz core speed until a hard reset or cold boot, sometimes I even have to unplug the power to the PSU at the back. Which card downclocks is random, today it could be the first card and tomorrow the second card. I've tried alternating between Normal bios switch and the LN2 switch, still the same result. A new one I'm starting to experience is when I switch my primary display to my TV (using HDMI port), sometimes it takes like 2mins for the screen to settle down, by that I mean like when you change the resolution on your monitor and you click apply and there's a momentary flicker, it's like that but it goes on from seconds to minutes.
I've tried and tried and tried to find out what the actual problem is but to no avail.
I've already tried a complete uninstall of drivers using DDU several times and then also tried to a new OS install a couple of times.
I've checked to see that I'm getting consistent power to the GPUs, I've done the bios thing, I've tried GPU-Z (though not really reliable) and more importantly, also both GPUs have the ProbeIT cables that came with the GPUs connected and used my Fluke 287 ( I actually bought this specifically so I can check the voltage readings) to monitor voltage reading, both the +12v, +5v and +3.3, all within nominal readings. I changed my PSU from 1100watt to EVGA Supernova G2 1300W. I've also monitored the NVVDD voltage on and off gameplay sessions and sometimes it idles around 0.9v and then to about 1.35v during gameplay and other times it's at approx 1.3v with no gameplay, sometimes even after a cold boot.
Finally today I bit the bullet and started a ticket with EVGA today, they were really really quick with the response, and they emailed me detailed instructions on things to try. Unfortunately these were things I've already tried before but didn't help. So they just said to RMA them. I've started the process, uploaded my invoice for Proof Of Purchase (bought from Scan Computers).
So now I'm just waiting got the RMA to be approved. All in all, I'm happy so far with the service from them, this is my first ever RMA so fingers crossed. I'm really sad to see these babies go, I mean I bought them and never looked back until now at least. ;-(
I'll keep updating as the RMA progresses, just thought it'll be nice for people to know that my experience so far with them has been good.
