Great, my 5900X pre-order is unlikely to come any time soon then :(. Might have to get a 5800X instead, just so I can finally complete my upgrade...

Yes I guessed that the 'two weeks at least' thing a short while ago could just lead to me sitting there waiting forever so I got a 5800x in the end.

Having had a look around at various e-tailers and retailers just now, it looks like there is plenty of stock of 5800x's around. There must be because OCUK have them in stock cheaper than a high street indian. Not such good news on 5900x and 5950x though.

I asked about where I was in the 5900X queue a few days ago and got this response:

...Further stock is on order but not expected until some point next month, but your order should ship from the next allocation :)

I ordered on 3rd of Jan, hopefully that gives you some indication of where you are.

Thanks for sharing the article @Purgatory, gives us some idea of what's happening at the fabs.

they cannot blame this on Covid now. there is something going on with the supply of wafers and chips...
it makes sense for AMD to sell the 5600x £300 and 5800x £400 both expensive products and to keep back the 5900x 5950x until the market is saturated then bring the 5900x and 5950x back when the market is buying the less desirable part, Nvidia is doing the same thing with the GPUs holding 3060ti back and 3080 which are the most sough after, and trying to sell the 3070 and 3090 as much as possible first

5950x is their highest margin chip. Along with the 5800x if you price it £/core.

If they are purely trying to maximise their profit, they would just have 5800x and 5950x in the market.

I think AMD is bring 5600x and 5800x in quantity because the supply constraint 1 5900x and 1 5950x are 2 of those lower SKU. They think the demand for the 6c and 8c will be loads higher.

I think they might have missed an opportunity in not bringing out those 5900x at least. 5950x I can understand as it is like a halo product. Plus not that many people will be having that chip and it’s use is relatively niche ie someone does a lot of productivity type of work commercially and wants to game a lot.
