Extremely SLOW internet speeds :/

Hey everyone, I need some help.

I am with possibly the worst ISP in history! TalkTalk...

On average I get a very frustrating 0.2Mbps down and 0.34Mbps Up
I am trying to sort out the problem myself as TalkTalk are pathetic to be honest.
I have tried the router (Thompson Speedtouch 580) in the houses master socket (No change), I have switched Micro-filters at all phone line sockets (No change).
My next option is to get a new ADSL Master socket and replace my 10 year old one.
If that doesn't work then I'm going to have to fork out £50 for a technician who will tell me stuff I already know...

Any help guys?

Router stats?

Took this from Routers interface page.

For starters you are on old fashioned ADSL and not the faster ADSL2+. You have a short line (maybe 1.2km or so) and consequently have few line errors and good sync rate. You should see and extra 500kbps on the sync as it happens and would see over 20Mbit if on ADSL2+.

You download rate, therefore is either your ISPs issue or a network issue with your home network.

Mucking with your internal telephone wiring will not likely make a blind bit of a difference I'm afraid. The 500kbps drop may be due to a prior fault or something.

Ok cheers man
Would you say there is a fault on the line?
Or that the fault lies on my property (Then i don't have to pay £50)
In other words, Call a technician out or not? :)
Thanks in advance

My cousin went from talktalk to bt recently. Speeds and stability shot right up

yeh I was looking at BT and they offer the best speed in my area (We have been left in the stoneage :/)
They offer a solid 8Mbps and that won't plummet at peak times :) + Unlimited download so that's great for me as I blow through 40Gb in about 2 days xD

Seems like their network which isn't a surprise. Do you get this slow speed what ever site you browse on? For example, is OCUK fine but some other site isn't? I'm with TalkTalk and occasionally their network goes to **** and certain sites (US based for example) can't be accessed or are extremely slow. I have to use a proxy server to get around it when it gets really bad. Funny enough it happened a couple of days ago but seems to be okay again now.

No, as he said the line stats are fine and it is either the ISP can't deliver the speeds you should be (due to traffic) or there is a problem with your PC/router/network in your home.

Assuming your kit is okay, I would suggest looking up a LLU provider at your local exchange by going on the Samknows website and changing ISP to one of them.

Just had a look at the exchange on Samknows and there are NO LLU providers available for my area :/
All just have big red crosses next to their names

You are connected to Talktalk via BT equipment and not LLU. Talktalk's BT based network is massively oversubscribed hence the poor speeds. Only option is to complain enough to get out of your contract and jump ship.

You say you average only 0.2Mb/s but in a later post say you can go through 40GB in two days. The router stats you posted show that in 2 days uptime you transferred 10GB of data.

I don't know what TalkTalk's FUP is but you may be being throttled due to excessive usage.

Your connection speed (bandwidth in this case, same thing) is good at 7,648 but i would guess that your IP profile is what is reducing your speeds.
Especially if you have been disconnecting and reconnecting quite often then this will make the exchange think your line is unstable and is therefore artificially limiting the bandwidth.

Use this speed checker to find out what your IP profile is:
http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
Go through the first flash based test and following this it will give you the option for further diagnostics. Click this, enter your landline number and run diagnostic test.
This will display a number of values one of which is the IP profile.
Screenshot or copy the results in here so i can take a look.

Haha mine isn't actually that bad anymore :p

Here are results:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.08 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7.65 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6 Mbps

From what you've said, your modem is connecting at 7.5 but you're only getting 1 Meg. So either TT/BT Wholesale are throttling you for excessive usage or something not right at the exchange, probably overcapacity as has already been said. Either complain loudly to TT or change. I DON'T think it's an issue with your equipment.
