Eyes in the night

Picture this, cycling back from Dartmoor on my own at 11pm along a disused railway line (plym valley for anyone that knows it), the only light coming from my measly head torch and a small hand torch as there was no moon. Not having seen a soul or any other light for about an hour, I decide to have a quick look down the huge bank on the left to the river below as I was cycling along, my torch isn't bright enough to see to the bottom, but I do get a reflection, two orange dots at the bottom of the bank.

The two orange dots were definately eyes, nothing spectacular about that, I had already seem plenty of them that night from the likes of sheep, cows and horses. The thing that made me slightly nervous and intrigued now is that they were orange and quite wide apart at about 6-8 inches, implying a big(ish) animal. It must be a wild animal of some sort as there are no fields anywhere near there, and there was only one set of eyes (sheep and horses you normally get 2 or more).

Anyone know what it may be? My first thought was a fox but the eyes were way too far apart for such a small animal.

ROFL.. that just looks silly...

I know the Plym Valley track well :)

Sounds a bit wierd, did you see much detail in the eyes or was it just 2 bright blobs? Could be one of the big cats that people say are in the countryside. Beast of Bodmin taking a vacation on Dartmoor? :p

I love the attention to detail there, the lack of a shadow convinces me never to mess with that cat. It's clearly a vampire.

*ahem*

But you only get a fleeting glimpse and it is impossible to be sure what you have seen. I often imagine that somewhere like the photograph below would be an ideal spot to see The Beast of Dartmoor and wouldn't it be nice to actually get a photograph of the elusive animal?

I dunno about you two but that seems to imply that that photograph is just an "artist's representation" Not an actual photo that someone has taken. I think its an attempt at irony because there never is a photo where the creature is clearly seen :p

Here's "real" photos

edit: i suspect you both know this already and are just taking the **** my bad :p

Surely you yourself must know what the animal is if you measured the distance between the eyes.

:p

Big cat was something I contemplated:p, after seeing the eyes I did start peddling *a little* quicker. Luckily it's all downhill to Plymouth so it would be one fit cat to keep up with me! :p I did shine my torch behind me a couple of times just in case too...:o

I was also watching that program about Dartmoor Zoo the night before, where the owner said he and a couple of the keepers saw a Lynx on the way back to the zoo. Normally I wouldn't take any notice but zoo keepers wouldn't normally make a mistake like that.:p

I couldn't really make out any detail in the eyes, other than they were quite orange and from the shape of them I would assume they were on the front not the side of the face (Ie not like a rabbit).

Deer from what I remember have whiteish reflections? So it would't be that.
