If alternatives like synthetic hadnt come along, what makes you think it wouldnt? Well maybe not 100 years when the oil runs out but certainly for decades to come as its not as though millions of cars and other stuff like generators/lawnmowers/strimmers etc are all going to disappear overnight.

True stuff is going to be around for awhile but replacing a petrol strimmer with a battery one isn’t exactly a huge investment.

Same goes for lawn mowers and almost any other garden/professional tool, while there are currently a few exceptions, there are battery versions available for almost everything.

Diesel generators can be replaced with fuel cell generators, or hydrogen combustion generators or even just battery banks depending on the application but that’s obviously a much bigger investment right now.

Give it 20 years or so and the retail market for fuel for ordinary consumers will be collapsing because hardly any of us will be buying it anymore. Cars and commercial vehicles make up the vast majority of consumption in the U.K., all those other users are a small fraction of our petrol/diesel use.

Petrol retailers in Norway are already feeling the pressure as consumption is dropping year on year. They are ripping out their pumps and installing chargers to stay relevant.

You’ll simply not be able to muse 2 mins down the road to a filling station. They’ll not have any fuel to sell you as it’s not a viable business anymore.

As consumption drops and the death spiral begins, retailers will have to take a bigger and bigger margin just to cover costs. That will push the price up further and further push people to the alternatives.
