Failure to stop

Taking a picture of his reg is hardly the same as him giving you his name and address for the insurance, how do you know he is the registered keeper?

I'm not saying that he satisfied the requirements of the RTA, but he can process a claim with the reg number. The Police can provide him with the rest of the details if required.

I genuinely don't want the other bloke to get into any major trouble / get banned etc (unless he has previous).
Previous or no previous I think you're being far too nice about it. If someone had deliberately done that to my car I wouldn't care much about them getting banned. If they can't keep their anger/ego in check while in charge of a vehicle capable of causing a lot of damage or injury/death to others than they shouldn't be allowed to drive imo.

Unless of course you feel you were somewhat responsible for what happened.

But how can i prove I was in the lane? I have no witnesses, I cannot prove my position in the lane, I can't prove anything. It has 50/50 written all over it!

I very much doubt a claims management company would even take it on, would they?

I'd like to state I am not an expert but I don't think you should be letting this guy get away easily. Was you stationary when he hit you?

I was stationary, yes. Should I ring my insurers now to inform them there has been an incident, but the driver failed to stop, and give them that drivers Reg? I am advising them I do not wish to claim on my own policy, and I will arrage repairs. Just got a quote for the wingmirror which is £182 inc all in. :(

If you want to pay for the damage yourself then you dont need to advise insurers. But if its going to magistrates court then you would want the insurers to know so the cost could be reclaimed?

Actually, he is obliged to notify his insurers, although if he fixes it himself, it is unlikely they will find out he non-disclosed upon renewal.
